Baseball drops heartbreaker to Ithaca in Empire 8 Semis

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 11, 2018)  – Senior Alex Detweiler, sophomore A.J. Falconite and freshman Raymond Cortes III each homered, but the Stevens Institute of Technology Baseball team fell to Ithaca College 8-7 on Domenic Boresta's bases-loaded, two-out, bottom-of-the-ninth, walk-off single Friday in the Empire 8 Conference semifinals at Dobbelaar Field. The game was played under NCAA Tournament-style rules with Ithaca designated as the home team for the contest.

Detweiler scored three times and junior Donny Gherardi had three hits for the Ducks, who fell to 26-16. Webb Little, Sam Little and Matt Carey each had three hits for Ithaca, who won their seventh straight game to improve to 27-14. The teams have split their four games this season.

Sam Little began the winning rally with a leadoff single to right off senior Drew Hanke (2-2). Adam Gallagher sacrificed Little into scoring position. Carey reached on an infield single after third baseman Thomas Paulich instinctively knocked down Carey's sharply-hit grounder to the left side, preventing the winning run from scoring on the play. Jack Lynch was intentionally walked to load the bases. Gherardi moved from left field to the infield as the Ducks were playing with five infielders to increase the likelihood of a force play at home on a ground ball. Hanke struck out Andrew Wollner on three pitches and Gherardi returned to his normal place in the outfield. After a first pitch ball, Boresta connected on Hanke's offering and drove the ball into the gap in right center field to easily score Little with the winning run.

Tom Cosentino (3-0) allowed a run on two hits over 2.2 innings to earn the victory.

After pitching was the story in Stevens' tournament-opening win over Houghton, offense was the order of the day in game two. The teams combined for 15 runs and 25 hits, including four home runs. Cortes' game-tying blast in the sixth was the first of the River Edge, New Jersey native's career, while Falconite's go-ahead shot in the fourth was the first of the season Old Bridge, New Jersey resident.

Wollner scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch to give the Bombers an initial lead. Paulich singled of Ithaca starter Tyler Hill to tie the game. Falconite gave the Ducks their first lead of the game just three pitches later, driving Hill's offering over the wall in right center.

Ithaca rallied with three runs in their half of the fourth against junior Danny Poidomani and took the lead on Webb Little's home run to right center. Cortes' home run again drew the team even and Detweiler sent his team-leading fifth of the year well over the wall to give the Ducks a 7-5 lead.

Ithaca rallied with two in the seventh, but Hanke induced a groundout to leave the bases loaded. The Pompano Beach, Florida native pitched 2 2-3 innings in his second-longest outing of the season.
