Baseball falls to NYU in regular season finale

HOBOKEN, N.J. (May 7, 2018)  – Junior Donny Gherardi had an RBI single but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to New York University 10-1 Monday evening in a non-conference game at Dobbelaar Field. It was the first-ever meeting between the teams.

Sophomore Patrick Rood doubled and freshmen Thomas Paulich and Gannon Kenney-McGowan each collected a single for the Ducks, who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end. Stevens concludes the 2018 regular season at 25-15, With at least two games remaining on the schedule, the Ducks have surpassed their 2017 win total by six.

Cooper Halpern and Jonathan Iaione each had two RBI for NYU, who finished the season at 28-12. The University Athletic Conference does not sponsor a postseason tournament, so the Violets will await the unveiling of the 2018 NCAA Division III Baseball Championship to learn if their season will continue.

Senior Quinn DiPasquale (4-3) allowed two earned runs on four hits in five innings. The right-hander finished the regular season with 77 strikeouts, good for third in the Empire 8 Conference.

Cameron Serapilio-Frank (9-3) struck six over 8 1-3 innings in his final collegiate game. Head Coach Doug Kimbler allowed his ace to pitch into the ninth inning before allowing the right-hander to hand the ball to classmate Matthew Millus for the final two outs.

The teams exchanged zeroes over the first two frames before NYU scored four in the third. Ryan McLaughlin reached on a one-out single to right to begin the rally. The NYU leadoff hitter advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and moved to third on Jack Walter's bunt single that came to a halt just inside the foul line between home and third. Walter stole second ad DiPasquale walked Colman Hendershot to load the bases. McLaughlin and Walter came around to score on Iaione's RBI double for the first runs of the game. Coltrane Tait grounded out to DiPasquale for the second out of the inning. Halpern reached on the second error of the frame when Rood threw wildly to first, allowing Iaione and Hendershot to score to give the guests a 4-0 lead.

The Ducks scored their lone run of the game in the fifth. Junior Matthew Paslo singled to lead off the inning. Freshman Nathan Zuckerman sacrificed the Ringoes, New Jersey native to second and Pasko moved to third on senior Tommy Baronner's groundout. Gherardi singled to score Pasko and trim the NYU lead to three. Sophomore Shaye Bartnick struck out to end the threat.

NYU added three runs in the sixth, taking advantage of three Stevens errors to break the game open. The Violets added an additional run in the eighth and a pair of runs in the ninth to provide the game's final margin.

Senior Drew Hanke threw a pair of scoreless innings and sophomore Chandler Brierley struck out the only batter he faced.
