Women's Tennis Rolls against Houghton College

HOUGHTON, N.Y (September 15, 2018) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's tennis won its second straight match after defeating Houghton College Saturday 8-1 in an Empire 8 Conference match on Houghton's Outdoor Court.

The win moved Stevens to 2-0 on the season with both victories occurring in the conference. Houghton dropped its second straight match to fall to 1-3 on the season and 1-2 within the Empire 8. The Ducks continued their dominant play in doubles and strung together key wins in the singles flights to clinch the match.

Stevens swept the doubles flights for the second straight match, dropping a total of three games. The senior tandem of Julia Earl and Sydney Zoretic opened the match with an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles over Amanda Carl and Erin Haley. Senior Jill Hadwen and junior Joilin Gomez put together an impressive 8-0 performance in the third doubles slot and freshman Agatha Malinowski and junior Isabella Calandra completed the doubles sweep with an 8-2 win in the first pairing.

Malinowski continued the strong start to her collegiate career with a dominant singles win, posting a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles without dropping a game. Calandra followed suit, dropping just one point in a straight-set win at No. 4 singles for the match-clinching point. Earl dug deep to pull out the victory at second singles, rallying from a 5-4 deficit to win a first-set tiebreaker en route to a straight-set win.

Senior Victoria Piskarev was in a highly competitive match at fifth singles. After losing the first set to Carr, Piskarev rallied to win the second set to force a winner-take-all third set. The back-and-forth battle came down to a super tiebreaker, where Carr ended the thrilling match by a score of 11-9. Sophomores Chelsea Braithwaite and Makenna Sargis posted straight-set wins at fifth and sixth singles, respectively to provide the final margin.

Up Next: Women's Tennis will have a quick turnaround as they take on Nazareth College tomorrow in a 2017 Empire 8 Championship rematch. Action is scheduled to start at 10 a.m.
