Eight’s Great! Women’s Volleyball sweeps Clarkson and Brockport

POTSDAM, N.Y. (September 15, 2018)  – Junior Shelby Stewart totaled 14 kills and classmate Taleen Mitchell recorded her fourth double-double of the year as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball swept Clarkson University and the College at Brockport Saturday at the Golden Knight Invitational.

The victories extended Stevens' winning streak to eight matches. The Ducks are 8-3.

In the opening match, Mitchell's 11 kills led seven different players as the Ducks defeated the hosting Golden Knights in three sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-15). It was the first meeting of the program since Sept. 10, 2016.

In game two, Stewart hit .467 (8-1-15) to lead four players with seven or more kills as the Ducks swept Brockport (25-17, 26-24, 25-20) to close the day. The teams have met just twice since the 2006 season with Stevens claiming victory in both matches.

Rachel Reusch recorded 10 kills for Clarkson, who saw their three-match winning streak come to an end. The Golden Knights defeated SUNY Potsdam in four sets earlier in the day to round out the first day of competition at 6-3.

Laiken Fox recorded a match-high 15 kills for Brockport, who fell to 5-7. The Golden Eagles were swept by Susquehanna to begin the day.

Volleys and Points (Clarkson)
  • A pair of Stevens errors opened the match scoring.
  • Taleen Mitchell recorded Stevens' first kill of the day, converting a set from senior Brianna Perez. The setter finished the match with 16 assists.
  • A back-and-forth opening set saw the teams alternate points, playing to seven ties.
  • A four-point run that featured Stewart putting down a Julie Greco set followed by an ace from the junior middle put Stevens in front 9-8.
  • With the teams tied at 13, three straight Clarkson errors sent Stevens in front for good.
  • Corinne Dougherty pinned down a Greco feed pushed the lead to four and the Ducks scored six of the last seven points to take the opening set. Kills by four different players closed out the frame.
  • A pair of Clarkson errors surrounded a Hain kill to push Stevens to a 3-0 lead to open the second set.
  • After the Golden Knights forced a tie, Hain knocked down a Perez set to return the lead to the road team.
  • Another three-error sequence from Clarkson gave Stevens a 12-8 lead and consecutive kills from Hain keyed a four-point run that opened a six-point margin.
  • Two Mitchell kills sandwiched an Elizabeth Chu ace pushed the lead to nine before Clarkson used a 8-2 run to claw back into the set.
  • A Meghan Edmund attack error pushed Stevens to set point and another setting error gave Stevens a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • Edmund set down an Amanda Collins set to open scoring in the final set.
  • Mitchell converted a pair of Perez sets to give Stevens a 3-1 lead before the hosts went on a 4-1 run to take slim lead.
  • The match changed courses when the Ducks went on a 12-1 run to take a commanding 16-6 lead. Dougherty recorded a kill and a block during the key stretch and Clarkson committed five errors to key the stretch.
  • Clarkson tallied four point to trim the Stevens lead to eight, but the Ducks scored four of the final six points to close the match. Mitchell converted a Kathleen Riegner set, which was immediately followed by a kill from junior Kristen Edmiston. The pair registered points in the reverse order to complete the sweep.

Match Point (Clarkson)
  • Mitchell notched her fifth kill of the set to close out the match.

Volleys and Points (Brockport)
  • Hain set down a Perez pass to open the match scoring. Perez and Greco totaled 26 assists in the second match of the day.
  • Chu served an ace and a pair of Brockport errors pushed the initial lead to four.
  • Brockport recorded its first point on a blocking error. The point keyed a 6-1 run that gave the Golden Eagles an early lead.
  • Hain returned the lead to Stevens with a kill and strong serving from Jillian Roumbanis forced Brockport into three errors and forced a timeout.
  • After taking the lead at 10-9, the Ducks did not relinquish it over the remainder of the set, growing it to as large as six.
  • A Dougherty set brought set point and Brockport's 15th error of the set gave the Ducks the opening frame.
  • Stevens jumped out in front for the second consecutive set on a Fox attack error.
  • Hain and Dougherty connected for back-to-back sets to push the lead to three.
  • The Ducks would hold a slim margin through the set before a 5-1 run gave Brockport a 13-11 advantage.
  • Stewart and Edmiston partnered for a block of a Meaghan Mastro attack, which was followed by Edmiston knocking down a Greco set from the right side to return the lead to Stevens.
  • Another pair of Brockport errors gave the Ducks a 17-15 lead and forced a timeout.
  • An Elena Grossman kill and a Kerri Michale ace tied the set at 20 and the teams traded points before a Lindsey Luce kill gave Brockport its first set point of the match.
  • A service error brought another tie and consecutive Mastro errors gave Stevens the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.
  • An attack error and a Fox kill gave Brockport a 2-0 lead in the final set. The two-point advantage to open a set was the largest for Brockport in either of its two matches.
  • A service error and a Perez kill drew the teams even.
  • An evenly matched stanza, the teams played to 10 ties in the set.
  • A series of multi-point swings saw Brockport take a three-point lead at 17-14.
  • With a chance to put distance between them, consecutive errors drew the Ducks within one and a Mitchell kill evened the set at 19.
  • Chu took possession of the serve and recorded an ace to give Stevens a two-point lead and Stewart knocked down a Perez feed to force a Brockport timeout.
  • Fox notched a kill to slow down Stevens, but the Stewart knocked down a Perez set to quickly return the serve to the Ducks and Stevens scored the final two points to complete the sweep.

Match Point (Brockport)
  • A setting error gave Stevens the sweep.

Inside the Numbers (Clarkson)
  • Stevens outhit Clarkson .257-.098 for the match. 
  • The Ducks hit .364 in the final set, making just two errors. Over the course of the match, the Ducks committed a season-low nine errors.
  • Hain totaled three blocks to help the Ducks gain the edge in the statistical category. Stevens also held the advantage in kills and aces.
  • Freshman libero Elizabeth Chu led Stevens with 20 digs. It was the Old Tappan, New Jersey native's fifth match with 20 or more digs. Chu continues to lead the Empire 8 Conference in digs per set. Chu was also credited with her first career kill. 
  • Hain hit .500 for the second time this season. The Roseville, Minnesota native ranks third in the conference in hitting percentage.

Inside the Numbers (Brockport)
  • The Ducks held a .232-.132 edge in hitting percentage and made just five attack errors across the first and third sets.
  • Chu recorded two aces as each team served three on the evening.
  • Stewart and Edmiston each collected two blocks to held Stevens gain an advantage over Brockport in blocks.
