HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 2, 2018)  – Junior
Ireland Tawney netted her first goal of the 2018 season but a pair of late goals sent visiting Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus to a 3-1 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology Field Hockey team Sunday in a non-conference game at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Haleigh Flukey recorded a pair of goals for FDU-Florham, who moved to 2-0 on the season. Kelly O'Neill also found the back of the net for the Devils, who were selected to tie for first in the MAC Freedom. FDU has won each of the last two meetings with the Ducks.
Stevens pressure forced an FDU turnover to grab a 1-0 lead. Senior
Regan Littell led the counterattack and slid the ball across to Tawney, who beat Samantha Rubin to her left side for the first goal of the game. It was the fifth career goal for the Hopkinton, New Hampshire native.
The Ducks had a pair of chances to force a tie during two key stretches in the second half, but FDU totaled four blocked shots coming out of a quarter ofÂ
Skylar Migliaccio penalty corners.
Turning Point
- After a Stevens green card, FDU set their offense for the restart.
- Maggie Sohns fired a shot from just inside the top of the circle, where Flukey deftly redirected it into the net.
Inside the Numbers
- The shot count was nearly identical. FDU totaled 15 shots, while Stevens fired 14, however the Devils held a 10-6 edge in shots on net.Â
- The Ducks held a 13-8 advantage in penalty corners and have outearned opponents 27-11 over the first two contests.
- A physical contest from the onset, the teams combined for four green cards and one yellow.
- Freshman Emily Franco made six saves.
- FDU's Brooke Sherwin led all players with four shots and three shots on net.
- Senior Hannah Silvestri and freshman Aryana Muscara each fired three shots to lead Stevens. Sophomore Skylar Migliaccio matched Muscara with two shots on net.
Unsung Hero
- Muscara recorded her first career defensive save five minutes into the second half. Following a penalty corner, the first-year defender kicked away a Makayla Pak scoring attempt, which kept the score knotted at one.
