Ireland Tawney scored in the 61st minute, classmate
Emily Sneddon made three saves in her first career start as the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team defeated Drew University 1-0 Tuesday in a non-conference game at Ranger Stadium.
With the teams locked in a scoreless duel, sophomore
Skylar Migliaccio fired a shot that was saved by Drew's Ryann Callaghan. Tawney pounced on the loose ball and pushed it past Callaghan for her fifth goal of the season. The five markers are a career high for the Hopkinton, New Hampshire native.
Tawney's heroics made a winner of Sneddon, who earned the victory in her first career start. The Sayville, New York native made all three of her saves in the second half to record the shutout.
Stevens improved to 6-3 on the year and have won three straight games. The Ducks have defeated the Rangers in each of the last four meetings. The one-goal margin moved Stevens to 4-1 in one-goal games this season.
Callaghan finished with saves for Drew, who dropped its fourth straight contest. The Rangers are 1-8.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens outshot Drew 14-3 on the evening, including an 8-3 edge in shots on net.
- Sophomore Brynn Froehlich led all players with four shots, including three on net.
- The Ducks earned five penalty corners in each half. Drew earned four.
Unsung Heroes
- The Stevens' defensive corps posted its third shutout of the season.
