Taleen Mitchell recorded 19 kills and 22 digs for her fifth double-double of the season, classmate
Shelby Stewart filled the stat sheet with 13 kills, 10 blocks and five digs for her first career double-double, and the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball extended its winning streak to 14 with a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-23, 24-26, 25-19) over Vassar College Thursday in a non-conference contest at Kenyon Hall.
Junior
Sara Hain added 10 kills and senior
Brianna Perez handed out 26 assists for the Ducks, who improved to 14-4 on the year. The victory improved Stevens' all-time record against Vassar to 15-8, although the teams have alternated each of the last four meetings.
Jane McLeod matched Mitchell with 19 kills and Annie MacMillan dished out 46 assists for Vassar, who fell to 8-6. The Brewers have lost two of their last three matches.
Volleys and Points
- The first set the tone for the evening, producing 15 ties and eight lead changes.
- Stevens grabbed the first point of the evening, when McMillan committed a service error.
- Back-and-forth play saw Vassar grab a 9-6 edge on a Devan Gallagher ace, only to see the resilient Ducks go on a 6-1 run to reclaim the lead. Hain set down a Perez set to spark the sequence and Mitchell and Stewart teamed for two blocks.
- A three-point run reclaimed a slim lead for the hosts, only for the teams to exchange the next 10 points.
- Trailing by one (21-20), Stewart knocked down a Perez set to kick off a four-point that brought the Ducks to set point, with a Vassar service error closing out the frame.
- Vassar received the first point of the second set on a service error.
- Hain converted a Perez feed to knot the score and consecutive Vassar errors put Stevens in front.
- After taking the lead, the Ducks were able to maintain an advantage over the rest of the set.
- Only needed seven kills to close the frame, strong serving and timely hitting forced 15 Vassar errors in the second set. A strong net presence contributed to three blocks during the frame.
- Vassar could only close to within one after consecutive kills from McLeod, but Mitchell knocked down a Roxy Stirb set to slow down the Vassar offense and a Stewart kill closed out the stanza.
- Mitchell pinned down a Perez set to open third-set scoring.
- Vassar turned in its most effective performance in the period, totaling 16 kills on 63 attacks to earn the set victory.
- The key stretch in the stanza came after Stevens reeled off four consecutive points to take a 12-6 lead, with Mitchell earning two of the points.
- A 13-7 Vassar run evened the score at 19.
- Freshman Terence Chan set down a Perez set to briefly reclaim a lead for the Ducks before the teams again traded long rallies before coming to a stalemate at 24 after a Stewart block.
- A McLeod kill and a Hain error closed out the set.
- Vassar scored the first three points of the fourth set before a pair of Stewart kills bookended a Mitchell ace to tie the set. Junior Julie Greco notched the assist on both successful attacks. The Thornwood, New York native finished with 18 assists on the evening.
- A pair of four-point runs boosted Stevens to a 12-7 lead. The five-point margin would be the smallest gap between the teams as the Ducks opened as much as an eight-point advantage after a Jillian Roumbanis service ace. The San Francisco, California native totaled 20 digs and two assists to go along with one ace.
- Stewart knocked down a Perez set to bring Stevens to match point before the Ducks were able to close out the contest.
Match Point
- Mitchell set down a Chu pass to close out the match. It was the fifth kill of the set for the Los Angeles, California native. Mitchell scored three of Stevens' last four points.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens held a slim .191 to .148 edge in hitting percentage, although the Ducks hit a match-high .317 (18-5-41) in the final set.
- Each team served six aces.
- Behind Stewart's 10 rejections, Stevens held a 12-4 edge in blocks. The Powell, Ohio native has reached double digits in blocks in two of her last five matches.
- The teams combined for 204 digs.
- Four different Ducks reached double figures in digs, led by freshman Elizabeth Chu, who matched a career-high with 34.
- Mitchell's 22 digs matched a career high, set earlier this season.
