HOBOKEN, N.J. (September 29, 2018) – Senior
Zisi Komar scored in the seventh minute to provide the Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer team with all the offense they'd need in a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher College Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference match at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Sophomore
Emily Damrell and freshman
Fiona Matthews also scored for Stevens, who extended its winning streak to four. Seniors
Olivia Butera and
Misha Brewster each recorded an assist for the Ducks, who moved to 6-2 on the year and a perfect 3-0 in the Empire 8 Conference.
Melissa McGowan made three saves for St. John Fisher, who fell to 4-2-2 on the year and 0-1-1 in the conference.
Stevens took control of the match in the opening 10 minutes, earning three corners and firing four shots. Komar finally broke through after taking a Brewster pass and firing in past McGovern and into the right side of the net. The San Diego, California native has recorded at least one point in six of her eight games this season, including four straight. Komar leads the team with 12 points.
Turning Point
- After Komar's goal forced Fisher into a slightly more offensive style of play, Damrell's goal proved to be the difference maker.
- Freshman Fiona Matthews found Damrell near the top of the 18-yard box and the Sictuate, Massachusetts native beat McGowan for her first goal of the season.
- The late first half marker made Stevens just the second team to score two or more goals against the Cardinals this season.
Inside the Numbers
- Stevens held a 19-3 edge over Fisher in shots, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal.
- The Ducks earned 12 corner kicks on the day and held the visitors to just one, second-half corner.
- DiDario made three saves for the Ducks in earning the victory in a combined shutout. Sophomore Erika McCarthy went untested in her 12 minutes of relief.
Unsung Heroes
- For the second straight match, a stingy Stevens defense corps kept the opposing team's top offensive threat off the scoresheet entirely.
From the Sidelines
- "Important three points this afternoon against a St. John Fisher side that is difficult to break down - our outside backs and holding midfielders had to be sharp and create a lot of space for us in our defending and middle third throughout the 90 minutes."
- "Thought we received some encouraging performances from a number of student-athletes and those minutes will help us down the road."
- "Now focused on prepping for the Route 3 Derby with Montclair State on Tuesday."
Up Next
- Stevens welcomes in-state foe Montclair State University to the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Oct. 2 for a non-conference fixture.
- The Ducks defeated the Red Hawks 4-0 last season and have won two straight meetings between the teams, although Montclair State leads the all-time series 9-8-1.
