Men’s Basketball's Streak Comes to an End with 92-85 Setback at Nazareth

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (January 11, 2019)  – Sophomore center Alec DiPietrantonio recorded a career-high 36 points, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was unable to overcame an early first-half deficit and fell to Nazareth College 92-85 Friday in an Empire 8 Conference game at Kidera Gymnasium.

Senior Ryan Coffey poured in 16 points and eight rebounds and classmate Frank Amari added 12 points for the Ducks, who saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end. The setback dropped Stevens to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.

Tyler Stenglein led the Golden Flyers with 25 points and Jake Burgio added 20 as Nazareth topped Stevens for the third straight meeting to even the all-time series at 13. Nazareth won its third straight game to improve to 8-3 on the year and 3-0 in the conference.

DiPietrantonio shot 14-for-18 from the field and made 8-of-10 from the line to shatter his previous career best of 22, scored against Houghton last season. The Mount Laurel, N.J. native also pulled down 12 rebounds for his second career double-double. The 36-point performance is the second-highest single-game total in the Empire 8 this season, and the highest single-game total within conference play. It's the highest single game total for any Duck since now-senior Jayson Winick netted 38 against Nazareth on Jan. 19, 2018.

The Ducks fell behind by double digits at halftime and trailed by as many as 17 before chipping away in the second half, drawing to within six after a Dylan Walsh free throw.

Pivotal Point
  • After trimming a nine-point lead down to four on an Amari old fashioned three-point play late in the first half, the Ducks went scoreless over the final 2:43 as Nazareth went on a 7-0 run to enter the intermission with an 11-point advantage.
  • The Golden Eagles would go on to score the opening basket of the second half to make it a 9-0 run before Stevens scored again.

Inside the Numbers
  • Nazareth outshot Stevens 57.6 percent to 50.8 percent and doubled the number of made three-point field goals (8-4).
  • The Ducks held the rebounding edge (34-32), including a 13-10 advantage on the offensive glass. As a result, Stevens held the edge (17-14) in second-chance points. The Ducks have won the battle of the boards in all but two games this season.
  • Naz's Brendan Wind led all players with nine assists. Amari and junior Michael Zignorski each dished out four to lead Stevens.
  • The Golden Flyers' Chris Jones blocked a game-high four shots. Amari and classmate Kevin Florio each recorded a block for the Ducks.
  • Behind the play of Coffey and DiPietrantonio, the Ducks held a 50-32 margin in points in the paint.
