UTICA, N.Y. (January 26, 2019) – Sophomore
Alec DiPietrantonio recorded his fifth double-double in six games with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team was unable to overcome a seven-point halftime deficit and fell to Utica College 80-72 Friday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at the Harold T. Clark Athletic Center.
Senior
Kevin Florio added 17 points and a career-high six assists for the Ducks, who fell to 13-6 overall and 6-4 in the conference. The Ducks have dropped two straight and have lost three of the last five meetings with Utica.
Shawn Gashi recorded a double-double of his own with 20 points and 10 boards and Kobe Lufkin came off the bench to go a perfect 7-for-7 from the line as the Pioneers won their third straight to improve to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in the Empire 8.
A back-and-forth affair in the first half, the teams traded the lead 10 times over the opening 14 minutes. Gashi hit a three to put the Pioneers in front at 25-22 and Utica scored the final three points of the opening period to hold a 37-30 lead at the intermission.
Pivotal Point
- Senior Jayson Winick knocked down a long three to pull Stevens within one (57-56) with eight minutes remaining in the contest, after Utica had opened a nine-point advantage.
- Justin Strielkauskas missed a jumper, but Avery Coston corraled the miss and scored a put-back layup to put the Pioneers up three. Coston finished with 11 points and nine boards.
- Coston fouled senior Ryan Coffey. The Monroe, New York native made one of two at the line and Coston and Kimedrick Murphy made consecutive layups to push the lead back to six.
Inside the Numbers
- Utica outshot Stevens 49% to 41%. The Pioneers shot 14-of-26 in the second half.
- Stevens made 10 threes on the evening against six for Utica, although the Pioneers shot 50 percent from behind the arc.
- Stevens was outrebounded 36-27, matching the largest margin the Ducks were outrebounded this season. Then 16th-ranked New Jersey City University pulled down 42 rebounds against Stevens' 33.
- The Ducks scored 18 points on Utica's 14 turnovers.
- Utica outscored Stevens in the paint, 32-30 and received more points off the bench, 30-13.
- The Ducks scored 17 fast break points, the team's second-highest total of the season. Stevens totaled 18 points on the break against Elmira on Jan. 4.
- Each team blocked four shots.
