No. 23/24 Women’s Soccer Extends Streak to Five with 2-0 Shutout of Wilkes

Wanzor and Abusada find the back of the net as Ducks extend streak to five.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 12, 2019)  – Sophomore Ally Wanzor and freshman Catalina Abusada each found the back of the net as No. 23/24 Stevens Institute of Technology women's soccer defeated Wilkes University 2-0 Saturday in a MAC Freedom fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Sophomore Izzy DiDario made a pair of saves in posting her third straight clean sheet for the Ducks, who won their fifth straight match to improve to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play. Dating back to Sept. 24, Stevens has not allowed a goal over its last 358:50, a span of four matches.

Samantha Cecere made seven saves for Wilkes, who fell to 4-5-1 on the year and 1-1 in league play. The setback snapped Wilkes' two-match winning streak.

After a scoreless first half, Wanzor opened scoring in the 56th minute. Sophomore Fiona Matthews played a ball across the 18-yard box and the Jackson, New Jersey native quickly gained separation from her defender and strongly sent the ball past Cecera for her third goal of the season.

Abusada netted her first collegiate goal in the 79th minute to provide a little breathing room for the Ducks, who upped their offensive pressure in the second half, more than tripling their shot total from the opening 45 minutes.

Dating back to Oct. 7, 2017, and their time in the Empire 8, Stevens has won 14 straight regular season conference contests.

Turning Point
  • With the Ducks holding a one-goal lead in the 79th minute, sophomore Gianna Nitti sent a free kick into the 18-yard box.
  • The ball caromed off a Wilkes defender and landed at the feet of Abusada.
  • The Berkeley Heights, New Jersey native solidly struck the ball into the back of the net to push Stevens' advantage to two.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot Wilkes 19-5, including a 9-2 edge in shots on net. The margin was especially tilted in the second half, where the Ducks outshot the Colonels 15-3. Wanzor led all players with seven shots, with four registering on net.
  • The Ducks earned seven corners on the afternoon, including six in the second half and held Wilkes to just two.
  • Nitti's assist on Abusada's marker was the Fort Lee, New Jersey native's first point of the season.
  • A concerted effort held Wilkes' Emily Bidelspach, the MAC Freedom's fifth-leading scorer, to just a single, off-target shot in the 80th minute.
  • Matthews has collected at least one point in three of her last four matches.
  • Each team committed 10 fouls.

Unsung Hero
  • Freshman Louise Gottwald was a strong presence in the midfield, displaying a good touch and an ability to transition the team quickly from defense to offense.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Jeff Parker)
  • "Not a great first half for us, but [we] were able to change the rhythm and flow in the second half to secure an important three points. We're still working and learning, and our overall attitude is something that is going to carry us forward when things get difficult. Good response today - now focused on Tuesday and FDU-Florham."

Up Next
  • No. 23/24 Women's Soccer continues MAC Freedom play Tuesday evening at the DeBaun Athletic Complex against FDU-Florham.
