MADISON, N.J. (October 16, 2019) – Senior
Shelby Stewart registered a career-high 18 kills and
Kathleen Riegner added a career-high 52 assists to help the Stevens Institute of Technology Women's Volleyball team defeat Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus 3-1 (25-10, 23-25, 25-20, 25-8) Wednesday at Ferguson Recreation Center.
With the win, the Ducks move to 10-11 overall, 5-0 in conference play and have clinched a top-two seed while also sewing up a home court advantage in the semifinals in the MAC Freedom Tournament. Stevens has now won 56 straight regular season conference contests dating back to October of 2012.
FDU-Florham was led by Jessica Garreffa and Nathalia Padron who had 12 kills apiece as they dropped to 6-12, 0-5 in MAC Freedom play.
Along with Stewart, senior
Sara Hain also had double-digit kills with 15 and hit .778 to go along with six blocks.
Overall, the Ducks racked up a season-best .435 attack percentage as a team while holding the Devils to just .083.
Volleys and Points
- Stevens kicked off the opening set with a bang, winning nine of the first 10 points of the first stanza.
- The Ducks used a 6-1 run later in the set to extend the lead to 14 and hold a 20-6 advantage.
- Stewart helped Stevens close the set on a 5-1 run with a pair of kills to win 25-10.
- It was the Devils who started the second set on a rally, going on a 5-0 run to take an early 6-2 lead.
- Trailing 12-7, the Ducks climbed back into the set by rattling off six straight points to take a one-point edge.
- FDU-Florham answered with a quick 4-0 flurry of their own to re-take the lead at 17-15.
- Tied at 23 late in the set, the Devils grabbed the final two points with back-to-back kills to win 25-23.
- After trading points early in the third set, Stevens was able to create separation with a 7-1 run to make the score 20-17.
- The Ducks then grabbed five of the last seven points of the set to take a 2-1 lead in the match.
- Much like in the first set, Stevens opened the fourth and final stanza with an early 7-1 advantage.
- Holding a 10-3 edge, the Ducks extended the lead to 13 by winning eight of the next nine points.
- Hain closed the contest with authority, producing four kills in the final seven points of the match to seal a 3-1 win for Stevens.
Match Point
- Needing one kill and one assist each to set a new career-highs, Stewart and Riegner hooked up one more time to close the fourth set with a dominant 25-8 victory.
Inside the Numbers
- In addition to setting a team-high in attack percentage, the Ducks also set a new club-best with 13 total blocks, seven of which came from Stewart.
- Sophomore Elizabeth Chu and senior Casey King led the Ducks on the defensive end, delivering 18 and 14 digs, respectively.
- King and freshman Allie Morton each had nine kills apiece while both hitting over .300 in the match.
- Florham had their highest success at the service line with 11 assists compared to just six from the Ducks.
- The 52 assists from Riegner are the most by a Stevens player since Julie Greco had 53 assists in a 3-1 win over Montclair St. on Oct. 14, 2017.
Unsung Hero
- King finished one kill away from producing her seventh double-double of the season with nine kills and a season-high 14 blocks.
Chasing History
- With seven blocks in the contest, Stewart now has a program-best 444 career blocks and is the active career leader in all of NCAA Division III and 12th across active players in all NCAA Divisions.
- Hain hit .778 in the contest to raise her season attack percentage to .390 and her career percentage to .348. If the season ended today, both percentages would set the Stevens program record for attack percentage.
