HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 22, 2019)  – Sophomore
Sean Masur sent a stinging ball past a diving Jake Padula with 70 seconds remaining in regulation to send the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team over DeSales University 2-1 Tuesday evening in a MAC Freedom fixture played at a soggy DeBaun Athletic Complex.
With the victory, Stevens improved to 10-3-2 on the year and to 4-0-1 in conference play. Picked first in the MAC Freedom Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ducks clinched a spot in the conference tournament with tonight's victory. The Ducks can potentially guarantee a home playoff fixture with a positive result this weekend coupled with losses by both Eastern and Misericordia. The conference's regular season championship and the top seed in the postseason will likely come down to Stevens' fixture with Eastern on Nov. 2. The Ducks have won four straight and remain perfect (7-0) at home.
With the teams deadlocked at one and extra time looming, junior
Cristiano Hocken began the winning play with a corner kick after freshman
Jake Jacquemot's scoring attempt barely glanced off the side of DeSales' Mark Stenske. Hocken looped the ball towards the scoring area and Jacquemot was able to head the ball towards the net, but the shot was redirected away from immediate danger by a DeSales defender. A second Bulldog attempted the clear the ball out of the 18-yard box, but didn't make enough contact with the ball and was forced to take a second touch to send the ball out of the dangerous area.
Reading the play, Masur was able to intercept the pass and lined up a right-footed blast from well outside the 18. The sharply-struck ball blew through the DeSales defense and right through the arms of a sliding Padula into the back of the net to set off a wild celebration just in front of the Ducks' bench. The marker was Masur's second game-winner of the season.
Masur's marker was needed after DeSales tied the match in the 81st minute. Sean Tunney received a Sean Murray header following a Bulldog corner. Murray's header swung around the Duck defense right to Tunney, who tucked the ball inside the near post to even the match.
Hocken scored his eighth goal of the year in the 46th minute, beating Padula from the top-left corner of the 18-yard box just 41 seconds into the second half for the first goal of the match. The New Providence, New Jersey native is tied for the MAC Freedom lead in goals, but leads the conference with 19 points. He's collected at least one point in four straight matches.
Padula made seven saves for DeSales, who fell to 5-10-1 on the year and 2-3 in MAC Freedom play. The Bulldogs have dropped three of their last four.
Prior to the match, the Ducks honored seniors
Andy Diaz-Delgado and
Brendan Krupa for their contributions to the program in an on-field ceremony. Combined this year's senior class has compiled a 50-18-8 record over their four seasons on Castle Point, while helping to capture two conference championships and three NCAA Tournament matches.
Inside the Numbers
	- Stevens outshot DeSales 27-6 and held a 9-1 advantage in shots on net. Hocken led all players with five shot attempts, with three registering on frame. The 27 attempts marked the Ducks' second-highest total this season. DeSales' six attempts were the second-fewest by an opponent.
- Sophomore Matthew Pinho matched a career high with three shots. Eight of Stevens' 10 field players took at least one attempt.
- Each side earned four corners.
- A chippy affair, the teams combined for 29 fouls, four yellow cards and one red card. The Ducks played the final 26:58 with a man-advantage, after DeSales' Kade Adomanis was ejected for a dangerous foul.
- Junior Aedan Boriotti did not register a save in winning his 10th match of the season.
- Stevens has won double-digit matches for the 19th consecutive season and for the fourth straight year under head coach Dale Jordan.
Unsung Hero
	- Sophomore Bailey Gano went on a lengthy run in the second half, pushing forward with speed into the attacking third to create a scoring chance from seemingly out of nowhere. The Parsippany, New Jersey native sailed his try well over the net, but proved to be a threat anytime he touched the ball in space.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Dale Jordan)
	- "Another thrilling game on DeBaun! Delighted to get the result. We didn't capitalize on the abundance of chances we created and credit to DeSales for battling and fighting until the end. [We] have to focus our efforts onto another away game on Saturday against Del Val."
