HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 22, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team continued its stellar first season in the MAC Freedom Tuesday, clinching the regular season title and remaining undefeated in conference play with a 3-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-18) sweep of Eastern University inside Canavan Arena.
With the win, Stevens has now won seven consecutive regular season conference titles dating back to 2013 in their time in the Empire 8. Additionally, the Ducks have won 57 consecutive regular season conference matches and move to 14-11 overall this season and 6-0 in MAC Freedom competition.
The loss for Eastern was just their third defeat in conference play since joining the MAC Freedom for the 2008 season as the fell to 15-9 overall and 5-1 the MAC Freedom. Prior to tonight's contest, the Eagles were 103-2 in league games in the last 12 seasons.
The Ducks will now have home-court advantage throughout the MAC Freedom Championship tournament, hosting the semifinals on Wednesday, Nov. 6 against the No. 4 seed while also having the chance to host the conference championship on Saturday, Nov. 9 with a win in the semifinals.
In the match, Stevens was led offensively by freshman
Allie Morton and senior
Shelby Stewart. The pair combined to produce 23 kills and a .400 hitting percentage in the win.
Defensively, the Ducks were able to hold Eastern to an .071 team attack percentage while not allowing any player to reach double figures in kills. Reigning MAC Freedom Defensive Player of the Week
Elizabeth Chu led the way with 18 digs and just one receiving error.
Volleys and Points
- Stevens dominated the opening set from the start, winning the first seven points and 15 of the first 16 to take a commanding 15-1 lead.
- The Ducks did not take their foot off the pedal late even with the early lead, grabbing the final five points of the set to grab a 25-7 set victory.
- The Eagles responded quickly in the second set, taking an early 7-4 lead.
- With Stevens holding a 10-9 edge, Eastern used a quick 5-0 run to force a Ducks' timeout and take a four-point advantage.
- Coming out of the timeout, the Ducks were able to answer with a 6-1 run of their own and make the score 16-15.
- Trailing 17-16, Stevens created separation by rattling off seven consecutive points.
- The Eagles attempted to claw their way back into the match but could not cut the deficit to less than four and dropped the set 25-20.
- In the third and final set, Stevens used a pair of early 4-0 runs to take a 10-5 lead.
- Eastern was able to climb back into the contest thanks to an 8-3 run and tie the set at 17.
- The Ducks were not to be denied, however, responding by winning eight of the final nine points of the set to win 25-18.
Match Point
- Morton, who now has double-digit kills in two of her last three matches, registered her team-high 12th kill to close out the match off an assist from sophomore Kathleen Riegner.
Inside the Numbers
- The Ducks dominated nearly every statistical category, including an 8-2 edge in service aces and a 5-1 advantage in blocks.
- Riegner narrowly missed registering her eighth double-double of the season with 34 assists and nine digs in the victory.
- Senior Sara Hain was also extremely effective in the contest, racking up eight kills with a .400 attack percentage.
- The Ducks have now won five consecutive matches dating back to their 3-1 win over FDU-Florham on Oct. 16.
- With the win, Stevens moves to 9-3 at home this season and has won eight straight inside Canavan Arena.
Unsung Hero
- After only taking a total of 15 swings, Hain made the most of her opportunities with eight kills to go along with a team-high three blocks in her final regular season home game.
Chasing History
- Posting two more blocks in the match, Stewart now has a program-best 460 total blocks in her career. She leads all active players in NCAA Division III and is tied for ninth among all Divisions in career blocks.
- After hitting .400 in the win, Hain now has a season attack percentage of .375 and a career percentage of .339. She is currently on pace to break the program record for attack percentage in a career while being just shy of her own single-season record of .381 set in 2016.

- "Tonight we felt like we had a strong scouting report that we executed fantastically. We served well, which allowed us to be on the attack most of the night. I'm especially proud of how we remained composed when Eastern inevitably pushed back."
Next Up
- The Ducks will step outside conference play for a matchup Thursday on the road against Hunter College at 6:00 p.m.
- Stevens has won 13 of the last 14 contests between the two teams, but the Hawks were able to best the Ducks in their last meeting on Oct. 17, 2018.
