NEW YORK, N.Y. (October 24, 2019) – Freshman
Allie Morton racked up a career-high 15 kills to help the Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team earned their sixth straight win with a 3-0 sweep of Hunter College Thursday at Hunter Sportsplex.
Morton bested her previous career-high of 14 and hit .289 while
Casey King produced her ninth double-double as the Ducks improved their overall record to 14-11 and have now won eight of their last 11 games this season.
For Hunter, junior Kendra Moore was extremely effective with a team-high nine kills and a match-best .571 attack percentage as the Hawks dropped to 10-15 on the year.
King, a senior from Wallington, New Jersey, registered 10 kills and 10 digs in the victory while senior
Shelby Stewart nearly broke the double-digit kills barrier with nine.
After grabbing the first set 25-19, the Ducks won the second and third sets by the identical score of 25-21 to earn their third straight sweep and their ninth overall this season.
Volleys and Points
- Trailing 2-1 to start the opening set, Stevens went on an 8-1 run to create early separation.
- The Hawks answered back immediately, however, using an 8-3 run of their own to make the score 12-11.
- The two teams then traded points for almost the entirety of the rest of the set, with Hunter never being able to cut the deficit to more than one.
- The Ducks closed the set by winning the final three points to grab a 25-21 victory.
- It was Hunter who started the second set with a bang, rattling off six straight points to grab a 7-2 edge.
- Stevens was able to respond with a quick 4-0 run and make the score 7-6 in favor of the Hawks.
- Trailing 14-11, the Ducks were able to take their first lead of the set thanks to a quick 5-1 run making the score 16-15.
- Holding a 18-17 lead late in the stanza, Stevens used a pair of late 3-0 runs to make the score 24-19.
- Hunter was able to stave off a pair of set points, but no more as Morton put down her ninth kill of the match to put the Ducks up 2-0.
- The beginning of the third set was a back-and-forth affair that saw a total of six ties and five lead changes before either team reached double-figures in points.
- Leading 13-12, the Ducks generated some breathing room with a 4-1 run thanks to two kills apiece by Morton and sophomore Corinne Dougherty.
- After Hunter cut the deficit to just one with three straight points, Stevens countered with a 3-0 run of their own to stretch the lead back to four at 20-16.
- With the score 22-21 late in the third, the Ducks made sure a fourth set would not be played by winning the final three points to clinch the victory.
Inside the Numbers
- As a team, Stevens hit .171 in the match compared to a .125 attack percentage for the Hawks.
- The Ducks managed to improve their hitting percentage immensely in the final set, hitting .316 in the final stanza.
- Elizabeth Chu joined King in producing double-digit digs for the Ducks with a team-high 13 in the match.
- Sophomore setter Kathleen Riegner racked up 34 assists for the second straight match and now has 829 assists this season.
Unsung Hero
- Chu has now reached the double-digit dig plateau in each of her last nine contests and 20 times overall this season. Her 380 total digs this season ranks second in the MAC Freedom
Chasing History
- Stewart added another block to her career ledger, improving her program-record total to 461 total blocks. She currently leads all active players in NCAA Division III ranks ninth across all NCAA Divisions in career blocks.
- Senior Sara Hain hit .333 in the match to move her season attack percentage to .374 and her career percentage to .324. If the season ended today, Hain would set the program record for career attack percentage and would be just shy of breaking her own single season record of .381 set in 2016.
