Perfection! Women’s Volleyball Finishes Regular Season Unbeaten in MAC Freedom Play

Ducks Finish Undefeated in Conference Play for Eighth Straight Season

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. (October 30, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's volleyball team completed the regular season undefeated in MAC Freedom competition with a 3-0 sweep of Delaware Valley Wednesday.

Senior Casey King registered a game-high nine kills and sophomore Kathleen Riegner produced a double-double with 29 assists and 10 digs in the victory to help the Ducks win their 58th consecutive regular season conference match and improve their overall record to 16-11 and 7-0 in the MAC Freedom.

The Aggies, meanwhile, dropped to 7-16 on the year and 0-7 in conference play.

Stevens has now finished undefeated in regular season conference competition in each of the last seven seasons dating back to 2012 when they finished 6-1.

Elizabeth Chu was also fantastic in the victory, producing a season-high five service aces while also registering double-digit digs 10th straight contest.

With the win, the Ducks will be the #1 seed in the upcoming MAC Freedom Tournament and will face off against the #4 seed Misericordia in the semifinals at Canavan Arena Wednesday, Nov. 6.

Volleys and Points
  • After trading points early in the opening set, Stevens created separation with a 9-3 run to make the score 16-10.
  • The Aggies tried to claw their way back into the match, cutting the deficit to five at 22-17.
  • The Ducks did not let Delaware Valley get any closer, however, scoring the final three points of the set to win 25-17.
  • In the second set, Stevens raced out to an early 4-1 lead, but could not hold the edge as DelVal answered with a 5-2 run to tie the contest at seven.
  • Leading 14-12, the Ducks put the set away with a 10-2 run to make the score 24-14.
  • Delaware Valley again fought back with three straight points, but junior Jillian Roumbanis made sure they did not get any closer as she registered her third kill of the season to clinch the 25-17 win for the second straight set.
  • Trailing 2-1 early in the final set, Stevens went on a 5-0 run to take a four-point lead and never looked back.
  • Holding an 11-8 edge, the Ducks scored nine of the next 11 points in the set to increase the lead to 20-10.
  • Stevens then recorded the final four points of the set to earn their fourth straight sweep and their 10th overall this season.
Match Point Inside the Numbers
  • Along with King, seniors Shelby Stewart and Sara Hain also added eight kills to lead the way for the Ducks offensively.
  • Freshman Allie Morton and Roumbanis were both tied for a team-high 13 digs in the match.
  • The double-double for Riegner was her eighth of the season, good for second on the team.
  • Stevens was able to hold the Aggies to an .021 attack percentage while hitting .196 overall.
  • The service line and the block line were also successful for the Ducks as they held an 8-2 edge in both service aces an total blocks.
Unsung Hero
  • Dougherty was effective throughout the night, registering six kills and hitting .211 while also adding a block and a dig.
Up Next
  • The Ducks will close regular season play with a pair of non-conference matchups Saturday in the Vassar Tri-Match against Vassar and Lebanon Valley.
  • Stevens holds a 13-6 overall record against Vassar and has won the last eight contests, including a 3-1 win on Sept. 18 last season.
  • It is believed to be the first time the Ducks and Lebanon Valley have faced off in women's volleyball.
