NEW PALTZ, N.Y. (October 9, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team saw their seven-game winning streak come to an end Wednesday as they fell 4-0 against SUNY-New Paltz at North Turf Field.
Tied 0-0 after the first quarter, the Hawks produced a pair of goals by Rachel Beam and Natasia Plunkett and added two more in the fourth quarter to pick up the victory and move to 8-3 on the season and push their winning streak to five games.
Stevens, meanwhile, lost for the first time since dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 10 Montclair State on the road in double overtime on Sept. 11. The Ducks moved to 9-4 with the loss and snaps the longest winning streak for the program since the 2009 season.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emily Franco highlighted the day for Stevens, producing 14 saves in net, just one shy of her career high.
Holding a 2-0 lead heading into the final stanza, the Hawks were able to put the game on ice with fourth-quarter scores from Jessica Ascencao and Kaitlyn Gunter.
Turning Point
- In a scoreless game halfway through the second quarter, New Paltz got two goals in less than five minutes off the sticks of Beam and Plunkett to grab an early lead.
- On the first goal in the 22nd minute, Beam was able to deflect a pass from Courtney Kruzikas into the net.
- Plunkett then made the score 2-0 when she found the back of the net off a pass from Shannon Bernhardt.
Inside the Numbers
- New Paltz held a 22-9 edge in total shots as well as an 18-7 advantage in shots on goal.
- Franco was able to keep the Ducks in the contest, earning 14 total saves compared to just five from Hawks' goalie Mackenzie Mortimer.
- Brynn Froehlich led the Ducks' charge offensively, producing three shots, all on goal.
- Michaela Thompson was the only other Stevens player with multiple shots in the contest, registering two.

Next Up
- Stevens will return to Hoboken, N.J. and MAC Freedom competition Saturday when they take on Misericordia at DeBaun Athletic Complex at 12:00 p.m.
