Men’s Basketball Wins Second Straight with 67-55 Victory over Skidmore

DiPietrantonio leads the offense with 24 points as Ducks open 2-0 for the first time since 2012-13.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (November 16, 2019)  – Junior Alec DiPietrantonio led all players with 24 points and nine rebounds to lead the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team over Skidmore College 67-55 Saturday in a non-conference game played at the Williamson Center.

After scoring just two points in the Ducks' season-opening victory over New Jersey City University, the junior center returned to his effective scoring ways of one season ago, shooting 10 for 16 from the floor and 4 for 7 from the line to finish with 24 points. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native led the Ducks in both scoring (12.5 points) and rebounding (9.9) as a sophomore, while totaling 10 double-doubles. DiPietrantonio pulled down a pair of boards on the offensive glass and seven on the defensive glass to help Stevens gain a 36-35 advantage on the boards.

Senior Spencer Cook added 16 points for the Ducks, who won their second straight to move to 2-0 on the young season. The Washington Township, New Jersey native made five of his 11 attempts from the floor, but the high-scoring guard made all six of his free throw attempts and is a perfect 14 for 14 from line over his first two games. As a team, Stevens is off to its best start since the 2012-13 season, when the Ducks won the first six games on the year en route to a 22-6 finish and an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Greg Skoric had 14 points and Pat Gallagher added 12 for the Thoroughbreds, who fell to 0-2. It was the first meeting between the teams since the 2007 season.

After a tightly contested opening half, Cook scored four straight points to open play in the second. The key sequence would come five minutes later.

DiPietrantonio responded to a Skidmore basket with a strong move in the paint that ended in an easy layup. The Ducks would go on to score the next nine points to finish with an 11-0 run that pushed Stevens' advantage from two to 13, putting the game out of reach. Skidmore would finally snap Stevens' dominating scratch with a layup with 8:25 remaining. During the key sequence, Stevens forced Skidmore into nine straight misses with three turnovers.

Pivotal Point
  • Jordan Cole sank a long three to reclaim a two-point lead for the hosting Thoroughbreds.
  • Three possessions later, Cole fouled senior Dylan Walsh on a three-point attempt.
  • The Staten Island, New York native made all three free throws to put Stevens back in front.
  • After a Skidmore miss, Walsh fed senior JoJo Mosca for a three to push the lead to four.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens shot 42.9 percent from the floor, including a 10 for 22 performance (45.4%) in the second half. The Ducks held Skidmore to 35 percent (21 for 60).
  • The sharp-shooting Ducks made three of their nine attempts from behind the arc. Graduate student Kevin Florio sank his one attempt from behind the arc, while senior Mosca went 2 for 5 from long range, while also snagging seven rebounds.
  • Stevens made 22 free throws on 26 attempts. The 22 makes from the line were the most for the team since the Ducks made 25 in last season's season-opening win over NJCU. Skidmore attempted just 12 free throws, making eight.
  • Each team committed 14 turnovers. Stevens turned the turnovers into 12 points, while Skidmore turned Stevens' miscures into 10 points.
  • Skidmore turned its 13 offensive rebounds into a 10-4 advantage in second-chance points. Ryan Murunge pulled down five of his eight boards on the offensive glass.
  • DiPietrantonio blocked a game-high two shots.
  • Freshman Matt Crowley made his first collegiate start, dishing out four assists over 26 minutes. Walsh matched Crowley with four assists.
  • The Ducks claimed the edge in points in the paint (30-26) and fast-break points (9-4).

Unsung Hero
  • Making his third career start, Walsh finished with eight points, three rebounds and four assists over a team-high 33 minutes. Walsh made six of his seven attempts from the line.

From the Court (Head Coach Bobby Hurley)
  • "I was very pleased with today's effort, as we did a good job defending Skidmore and keeping them off the boards. Skidmore defended our shooters and the three-point line really well, but Alec was terrific at scoring the ball around the rim."
