Women’s Fencing Finishes Perfect 6-0 at Drew Holiday Invitational

Ducks Extend Winning Streak to 13 Consecutive Matches

MADISON, N.J. (November 24, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's fencing team extended their winning streak to 13 matches after going 6-0 Sunday in the Drew Holiday Invitational.

Senior Teny Odaimi went 8-4 on the day and earned her 100th career victory at epee while sophomore Kiera Barnes finished 16-1 on the day as the Ducks improved to 13-1 on the season.

As a team, Stevens defeated Army-West Point, Yeshiva University, the University of Florida, Denison University, Fairleigh Dickinson University and Drew University on the day.

The sabre squad led the way for the Ducks in the meet, going 46-8 at the weapon while foil went 44-10 and epee finished 34-20 on the day.

Overall, Stevens outscored their opponents 124-38 on the day and only lost two of the total 18 contests across the three weapons.

Along with Barnes, Chrissy Drobish (15-2), Claire McNeill (10-2) and Sara Persau (10-1) all produced double-digit victories in the meet for the Ducks.

Army West Point (Win 20-7) Yeshiva University (Win 26-1)
  • Chan and Mizzi had two wins each to lead the epee squad to an 8-1 victory over Yeshiva.
  • Nicole Strezewski, Ashley Yu and Caitlin Uang all started their days with a bang combining to lead Stevens to a perfect 9-0 record at foil.
  • The Ducks also went 9-0 at sabre thanks to three wins from Bayla Gellerstein and two apiece from Barnes, Drobish and Gabriella Onelli.
University of Florida (Win 20-7)
  • Odaimi and McNeill registered two wins apiece while Capra and Chan added one each for a 6-3 victory at epee over the Gators.
  • At foil, Persau and Urban-Spillane both picked up a pair of victories in what was a 6-3 win for Stevens.
  • Barnes and Drobish combined to go 6-0 and Gellerstein added two more at sabre to give the Ducks an 8-1 win.
Fairleigh Dickinson University (Win 18-9)
  • McNeill gave the Ducks two victories in what was the lone loss of the day at epee, as they fell 2-7.
  • The foil squad was able to turn the tables, however, defeating the Knights 7-2 thanks to three wins from Persau and two apiece by Kubit and Urban-Spillane.
  • Stevens dominated the contest at sabre, with Barnes, Drobish and Gellerstein teaming up to go 9-0.
Denison University (23-4)
  • Capra and Odaimi won two bouts each while Burns and McNeill each grabbed one win in a 6-3 victory at epee.
  • The Ducks spread the wealth at foil as six different fencers grabbed at least one win including Zoe Casten, Ellis and Uang.
  • Much like in the previous bout, the sabre squad went a perfect 9-0 thanks to three wins each from Barnes, Drobish and Wissemann.
Drew University (17-10)
  • McNeill, Odaimi, Mizzi and Capra all won at least one bout at epee to close the meet out with a 6-3 victory.
  • Persau went 3-0 and Kubit and Strezewski added two wins each for the Ducks at foil to give Stevens a 7-2 win.
  • The sabre squad dropped their lone contest of the meet in a narrow 4-5 defeat despite two wins each from Barnes and Drobish.

  • The Ducks will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 18 when they compete in the West Point Invitational in West Point, N.Y.
