CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (November 6, 2019) – Junior
Brynn Froehlich scored the equalizing goal in the 40th minute, but DeSales responded with the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology field hockey team Wednesday at Turf Fields.
With 58:14 on the clock and the score tied at 1-1, Catie McGrath found the back of the net for the second time in the contest to send DeSales to the MAC Freedom Championship match and improve their record to 13-8 this season.
The Ducks, meanwhile, will close the season 11-8 overall after advancing to the conference tournament for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons.
Trailing 1-0 in the third quarter, Froehlich was able to tip a pass from
Ireland Tawney past the keeper in the 40th minute to tie the score.
McGrath gave the Bulldogs the first score of the game in the 27th minute when she was able to fire a shot just inside the post.
Inside the Numbers
- The match was nearly even in most offensive categories, with DeSales holding a narrow 10-9 edge in shots and the two teams were tied with nine penalty corners apiece.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Franco registered six saves in the contest and closes the year with 104 total saves, which ranks 10th in program history in saves in a single season.
- The goal for Froehlich was her sixth of the season, the second-most on the team this year.
- Tawney's assist was her first this season after she posted six total in her junior campaign.
- Froehlich, sophomore Kila Eadie and senior Michaela Thompson all were tied for the team lead with two shots each.
Unsung Hero
- Much as she has throughout the year, junior defender Anna Cooper was the anchor for the Ducks defense in the match. She closed the season playing in every minute of Stevens' final five contests of the year.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Meredith Spencer-Blaetz)
- "I am incredibly proud of the effort of the team tonight. After a slow start, they came out and played with a fantastic effort. We faced some uncontrollable situations this evening, but the team continued to fight throughout. It's never easy to see a season come to an end, but it caps off incredible careers for Michaela Thompson, Ireland Tawney and Emily Sneddon. They will be missed."
