Men’s Soccer Falls to King’s in MAC Freedom Semifinal

Masur scores, but men's soccer can't overcome first-half deficit

HOBOKEN, N.J. (November 6, 2019)  – Sophomore Sean Masur scored in the 84th minute, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's soccer team was unable to overcome an early deficit and fell to King's College 2-1 Wednesday in a MAC Freedom semifinal fixture at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Junior Aedan Boriotti made five saves for the Ducks, who saw their six-match winning streak come to an end. The Ducks fell to 12-4-2 on the year and split their two meetings with the Monarchs.

Alastair Dinnan provided the offense for King's, scoring in the seventh minute and the 48th minute to send the Monarchs on to the conference championship match. Connor McKeown made three saves for King's who won their fourth straight match to improve to 15-4-1. The Monarchs will take on second-seeded Eastern University, who bested Misericordia 1-0 in overtime earlier in the day, to advance through on the other side of the bracket.

Dinnan silenced the DeBaun faithful early in the match. Dylan Ramage made a run parallel to the far sideline, played a ball into the 18-yard box. Alex Showalter headed the ball wide to Dinnan, who drove a crossing ball into the net for his third goal of the year. The goal was the first conceded by the Ducks in nearly 200 minutes.

Dinnan doubled King's lead in the early stages of the second half, collecting a loose ball inside the 18 and beating Boriotti in the lower-left corner of the goal. It was the first career brace for the King's forward and the performance marked the first time the Ducks conceded two goals in a match to a conference opponent.

Masur provided new life for Stevens in the 84th minute. The Bridgewater, New Jersey native received classmate Leo Mussachia's pass and sent it sailing into the back of the net from just outside the 18. The goal brought a renewed energy to the pitch, and while the Ducks generated three chances over the final three minutes, they were unable to find the equalizer.

Turning Point
  • Shortly after Masur's marker, the Ducks had a chance to even the match.
  • Junior Stephen Johnson sent a perfectly-placed through ball and the speedy Cristiano Hocken attempted to track it down alongside King's defender August Axtman. McKeown came off his line to prevent the scoring opportunity.
  • The ball glanced off the sliding McKeown and a charging Hocken and jarred loose. With an open net, Hocken was unable to continue his run and McKeown pounced on the ball before securing it to end Stevens' threat.

Inside the Numbers
  • Stevens outshot King's 21-9 on the evening, including a 14-5 edge in the second half as the Ducks attempted to even the match. Masur led all players with four shots.
  • Although Stevens held a significant edge in shots, it was King's who claimed a 7-4 edge in shots on net.
  • The Ducks earned seven corner kicks against just two by the Monarchs.

Unsung Hero
  • Boriotti made a pair of tricky saves in the 78th minute to keep the margin at two. Boriotti punched away Kevin Kolaski's difficult-angled shot and then stopped an Axtman header on the ensuing corner.

From the Sidelines (Head Coach Dale Jordan)
  • "Disappointed in the result. We didn't do a good job of defending their attacks tonight. Credit to King's; they worked hard and fought for the result and best of luck to them on Saturday."
  • "Overall, a great learning year for our young group and a massive thank you to our seniors, Andy and Brendan, for all the hard work they have put in over the last four years."
