HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 28, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team saw five different players scoring in double figures, led by 15 points apiece from sophomore
Jess Broad and sophomore
Vanessa Elliott, to defeat The College of New Jersey 71-67 Saturday inside Canavan Arena in the opening game of the Stevens Holiday Classic.
The Ducks knocked down 13 3-pointers, including a game-high four from junior
Christina Li, and shot 61.9 percent from beyond-the-arc to snap a three-game losing streak and defeat TCNJ for the first time since Jan. 12, 2015.
TCNJ was led by sophomore Rachel Gazzola who produced a career-high 26 points to go along with seven boards and seven assists in the loss.
Broad, Elliott, Li, sophomore
Allie Moss and junior
Lily Taeuber all registered at least 10 points in the win and combined to go 12 for 17 from 3-point-range. The 15 points for Elliott were also a career-high.
Holding their largest lead of the contest at 66-55 with 4:04 left in the fourth quarter, Stevens had to stave off a ferocious Lions comeback attempt as TCNJ scored the next 10 points to cut the deficit to one with 1:25 to play.
After trading a pair of baskets to make the score 68-67, Broad was able to draw a foul and sink a pair of free throws with 12 seconds remaining.
Danielle Cornetta and Li then were able to put the clamps down defensively on the final defensive possession, forcing a NBA range 3-point attempt from Gazzola that hit the back rim and fell into the arms of Taeuber to seal the victory.
Turning Point
- The Ducks held a narrow 55-53 lead with 7:02 left in the final stanza and were able to use a quick 9-0 run in just over a minute of game time to lead by double-digits for the first time in the contest.
- The run started with Li answered a 3-point basket by Gazzola with one of her own followed by back-to-back 3's from Elliott.
- The run was too much for the Lions to overcome as they were never able to regain the lead.
Inside the Numbers
- In her first action of the 2019 season, Taebuer was fantastic off the bench with 10 points in just 16 minutes of game action.
- Stevens' bench played a huge role in the victory, outscoring the TCNJ bench 30-2 in the contest.
- The 61.9 percent 3-point shooting was the best for the Ducks since they shot 71.4 percent from downtown against Alfred University on Feb. 9, 2018.
- Broad also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds while also shooting 50 percent from the floor.
- TCNJ shot just 38.5 percent from the floor and 21.4 percent from 3-point-range.
- Stevens has now opened the year with back-to-back wins at home in two straight seasons.
- In the other contest at the Stevens Holiday Classic, no. 1 Tufts University got past Christopher-Newport University 70-65.
Unsung Hero
- Emily Nunez was extremely efficient off the bench with five points and five boards in just 16 minutes of game action.
