HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 29, 2019) – Sophomore
Jess Broad scored a game-high 18 points to lead the way for the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team Sunday as they fell 89-56 to Christopher Newport University in their final contest of the Stevens Holiday Classic inside Canavan Arena.
Trailing by five points halfway through the second stanza, the Ducks were outscored 30-7 to close the second and open the third quarters to give the Captains a 63-35 lead and help them improve their record to 9-4 this season.
Broad, the 2018 Empire 8 Rookie of the Year, shot 50 percent from the floor and scored in double figures for the sixth time in the last seven contests while also leading Stevens with five rebounds.
CNU had four players score in double figures in the win, three of which came off the bench including Jessica Foster who poured in a game-high 17 point while going 5 for 11 from 3-point-range.
The Ducks trailed by just four points at the end of the first quarter and were able to keep within striking distance thanks to back-to-back 3-pointers from Broad and
Christina Li to make the score 33-28 with 5:56 remaining in the first half.
The Captains took over from there, scoring 14 of the final 19 points of the quarter to take a 14-point lead heading into the break.
The second half saw more of the same with the Captains registering 16 of the third quarter's first 18 points to swell the lead to 28 to cruise to a 33-point victory.
Inside the Numbers
- CNU held a 61-16 edge in bench points as well as a 32-14 advantage in points in the paint.
- The Captains were able to force a total of 33 turnovers in the contest while committing just 16 to hold a 33-10 advantage in points off turnovers.
- Sophomore Allie Moss joined Broad in double figures with 10 points to score at least 10 in back-to-back contests for the second time this season.
- Along with her 18 points, Broad also led Stevens with five rebounds and two blocks.
- Freshman Natayla Spinks and freshman Amber Porrett both scored for the first time in their collegiate careers with Spinks registering six points and Porrett adding four.
- The 33-point loss is the most lopsided for the Ducks since losing by 33 against St. John Fisher College on Feb. 2, 2018.
- The Ducks were more efficient from the floor than CNU, shooting 40.0 percent from the floor and 41.7 percent from 3-point-range while the Captains shot 39.7 percent and 37.1 from downtown.
Unsung Hero
- Spinks was extremely efficient in just nine minutes of game action, producing six points while going 4 for 6 from the free throw line and adding three rebounds.
From the Sidelines (Head Coach Megan Haughey)
- "I thought in the game vs. TCNJ we took a huge step in finding our offensive rhythm and output. We battled, handled the runs, and fought out a great win."
- "We knew Christopher Newport would apply pressure, which we handled at times, but eventually it broke us down. They were the better team. We continue to build and grow. In those terms, the weekend was a success."
Next Up
- Stevens will face off against Montclair St. University Jan. 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Hoboken, N.J.
- The game was originally scheduled for Dec. 2 but was moved because of heavy snow in the area.
