St. John Fisher Snaps Women's Basketball's Winning Streak

HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 1, 2019)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team battled back from an 11-point deficit but four double-digit scorers for St. John Fisher proved to be too much as the Cardinals topped the Ducks 54-47 in Friday evening's Empire 8 conference matchup at Canavan Arena.

Sophomore Maddi Hahn came off the bench to lead Stevens with 13 points, while graduate student Anna Toke lead in the rebound column with nine boards. The Ducks fall to 13-7 on the year and 8-3 in Empire 8 play.

The Cardinals were led by Leah Koonmen with 13 points along with 12 points from both Sydney Masna and Julia Mertsock. St. John Fisher improved to 12-6 overall and 6-3 in the E8.

In the third quarter, Stevens went on a 10-2 run over the span of six minutes to climb their way back and take a one-point lead. Masna ended the Ducks streak after knocking down a three to put the Cardinals back in the lead. The teams continued to trade points and headed into the fourth quarter tied at 34.

The Ducks came out and scored the first three points of the final quarter after a layup by freshman Meghan Douglas and a made free throw by Hahn, putting Stevens up 37-34. Once again, Masna broke the short-lived run with a good basket to put Fisher within one.

Two good foul shots by Mertsock and a made layup by Ella Eckert gave the Cardinals a lead they would keep for the remainder of the game.

Turning Point
  • After a made foul shot by Toke to bring the Ducks within three points with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, the Lincoln Park, New Jersey native missed her second foul shot, but was bailed out by an offensive rebound by sophomore Sam Winter.
  • Fisher immediately regained possession after Elle Lazore picked off a pass by Winter. Freshman Jess Broad then fouled Lazore to stop the clock.
  • Koonmen scored the final four points of the game from the charity stripe to allow the Cardinals to walk away with the victory.
