Men’s Basketball Comes Up Short in Empire 8 Semifinal Matchup with Alfred, 80-57

Coffey double-doubles, but key first-half run ends Stevens' season.

ALFRED, N.Y. (February 22, 2019)  – Honorable Mention All-Empire 8 Conference forward Ryan Coffey posted his second double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds, but the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team fell to Alfred University 80-57 Friday in an Empire 8 Conference semifinal contest at Terry S. Galanis Family Arena.

Senior Kevin Florio added 15 points and five rebounds and classmate Jayson Winick came off the bench to add 13 for the Ducks, who fell to Alfred for the third time this season. Stevens concludes the 2018-19 campaign at 16-10.

Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year Sage Brown scored 19 points and pulled down a game-high 18 rebounds for the Saxons, who advanced to the conference's championship game for just the second time in program history. Alfred won its 12th straight game to improve to 22-4.

Meeting for the first time in the postseason, the teams alternated misses before Florio broke the seal on the basket with a three-pointer, nearly two-and-a-half minutes into the game. Dom LeMorta put Alfred on the board five possessions later. LeMorta finished with 13 points as five Saxons reached double figures.

The teams alternated possessions in a back-and-forth opening 10 minutes. Alfred went in front for good when LeMorta made three straight free throws after getting fouled on an attempt from behind the arc. For the game, Alfred attempted 33 free throws.

Coffey shot 4-for-9 from the field in his final collegiate game, including 2-of-4 from behind the arc. The Monroe, New York native went 1-for-2 from the line to post his 17th double-digit performance of the season. Coffey reached double figures in each of the last six seasons.

From the Court
  • "We struggled to score the ball tonight, but credit Alfred because they were very good on both ends of the floor. It's always tough when the comes to an end, but we are proud of how this group competed on a nightly basis. We will miss our seniors, but they have left our program in a great place and we look forward to their contributions showing for years to come. - head coach Bobby Hurley.
