Monteleone Nets Four to Send No. 12/No. 14 Men’s Lacrosse Over Haverford

Junior attackman matches career-high with four goals as Ducks win second straight.

HAVERFORD, Pa. (March 16, 2019)  – Junior attackman Brendan Monteleone matched a career high with four goals to lead No 12/No. 14 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team to an 18-9 victory over Haverford College Saturday in a non-conference game at Swan Field.

Senior Max Bailey added two goals and three assists and sophomore Nico Ipeker matched a career high with five points for the Ducks, who won their second straight game to improve to 5-2. Stevens improved to 5-3 all-time against the Fords and have won each of the last four meetings. The Ducks have won two straight.

"Great to get a road win against a solid Haverford team," said head coach Gene Peluso. "I love the fact that we were able to play all of our healthy players and that we utilized all five goalies. Great team win to start off our spring break."

Senior Eric Radbourne and freshman Brendan Sullivan each netted a hat trick as 12 different players recorded at least one point. Sullivan's three-goal performance was the first career hat trick for the Lafayette Hill, Pennsylvania native, while Radbourne posted his second of the season.

Sophomore Ryan Gebhardt added a goal and an assist, and senior Nicholas Carnovale and junior Max Ranaldi also found the back of the net, as the Ducks posted a season-high 18 goals. Freshman Michael Burns, junior Connor Murphy and sophomores Tim Spears and Ryan Caplis each handed out an assist to round out the Stevens scoring. The helpers dished out by Murphy and Burns were the first of their respective collegiate careers.

Blake Brinster and Sean Mowatt-Larssen each scored twice for Haverford, who fell to 1-5.

"We were very impressed with the play of Monteleone and Ipeker, who got us going early and often," Peluso added. "Now we prepare for a tough opponent in Christopher Newport."

Senior Carson White drew the start in the cage and made five stops to earn the victory. All five netminders saw time in net, with junior Jack Braswell making three saves. Freshmen Gio Garcia and Grant Petracca made their collegiate debuts and combined for three saves. Dylan Slack started for Haverford and made five saves for the Fords and suffered the loss.

Stevens won the opening faceoff and turned the opening possession into the first goal of the game, with Bailey converting a Caplis feed for his 12th goal of the season. His two-goal performance moved the Millersville, Maryland native to 89 for his career.

Haverford evened the game two possessions later before Radbourne and Ipeker beat Slack 28 seconds apart to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

Trucksess and Frost surrounded an Ipeker marker to bring the hosts within one, but Stevens scored the next eight goals to take command of the game. Sullivan and Radbourne began the stretch and Carnovale beat the first-quarter buzzer to open a four-goal margin. Ipeker scored his first man-up goal of the year to open second-quarter scoring and Monteleone scored nine seconds later to push the lead to 9-3. Bailey, Radbourne and Gebhart beat Slack over a 2:30 stretch to give the Ducks a 12-3 lead at the intermission.

Haverford scored three of the first four goals in the third quarter, but Monteleone and Sullivan combined for the next four goals to reclaim a nine-goal advantage. Monteleone also scored four goals against Empire 8 opponents St. John Fisher (Mar. 31, 2018) and Utica (Apr. 7. 2018).

Rob McLallen scored his eighth of the year to close out the third period and the Fords scored two of the game's final three goals to provide the final margin. Ranaldi beat Ethan Donlon five minutes into the fourth quarter for Stevens' final goal of the afternoon. Donlon, who came on at the start of the second half, finished with six saves.

For the game, Stevens outshot Haverford 40-32, including a 29-20 advantage in shots on goal. The Ducks have fired at least 40 shots in every game this season. Ipeker, Monteleone and Radbourne each fired six attempts to lead the Ducks, while Haverford's Ben Frost led all players with seven.

Defensively, sophomore Jason Coyle recorded a career-high four caused turnovers to lead all players. Colby Ferrigno paced Haverford with three. For the game, Haverford committed 18 turnovers, while Stevens had 17. Stevens won the ground ball battle, picking up a season-high 46 against the Fords' 29. Carnovale led all players with eight, while Murphy picked up four. Freshman Matt Logan and Craig Stockfeder joined White in scooping up three as 25 different players picked up at least one. McLallen led Haverford with four.

Stevens had a strong day in the 'X', winning a season-high 21 faceoffs. Carnovale went 10-3 in the 'X' to lead the Ducks, while Murphy and sophomore Trevor Kiessling combined for the other seven victories. Kiessling's four wins marked a season high.

"Great job also by our faceoff group, who were 21-7 on the day," Peluso commented.

Stevens went 15-for-20 on clears, while holding the Fords to 15-of-25. Stevens converted its only extra-man opportunity, while killing off both its penalties.
