No. 4 Men’s Volleyball Defeats Hunter and St. Joseph’s-LI in Tri-Match

The No. 4 men's volleyball team defeated both Hunter and St. Joseph's in five sets.

NEW YORK, N.Y. (March 16, 2019)  – Junior David Lehman combined for 36 kills across two matches as the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team topped Hunter College (19-25, 25-15, 16-25, 25-20, 15-11) and St. Joseph's College-Long Island (25-27, 25-19, 25-10, 18-25, 15-7) in Saturday's Hunter Tri-Match. 

Sophomore Ryan Byrne added 29 kills across the two contests for the Ducks, who improved to 21-2 this season. 

Hunter was led by Christian Maisonet's double-double of 11 kills and 10 digs as the Hawks fell to 12-7 on the year. St. Joseph's-LI was paced by 16 kills from Paul Curaro as the Golden Eagles dropped to a record of 12-3.

Volleys and Points (Hunter)
  • Hunter took the first two points of the match after Michael Jazgarski issued a kill before the Ducks committed an error. 
  • Sophomore Jack Bittker set down a pass from junior Grant Burden to put Stevens on the board. 
  • The Hawks took a 6-3 lead when Jazgarski collected another kill prior to an additional error by the Ducks. 
  • Stevens tied the set when Byrne, Lehman and junior Jonathan Frenzel each delivered a killl.
  • Hunter scored four consecutive points following a Ducks service ace, two kills from Jazgarski and an additional from Qendrim Shala. 
  • Three straight errors by Stevens put the Hawks up by six. 
  • The Ducks brought themselves within three points after Lehman issued a kill and Hunter committed two errors. 
  • The Hawks took a 24-18 lead when Blake Hogan tallied a kill before Jazgarski and Cyrus De Guzman blocked an attempt and the Ducks committed an error. 
  • Senior Cooper Diamond followed with a kill but a block by Alec Helford and De Guzman gave Hunter the final point of the set.  
  • Byrne set down a pass from senior Joshua Hinton to give Stevens the first point of the second set. 
  • Hunter took a 4-2 lead following two errors by the Ducks and a block by Jazgarski and Jben Mui.
  • Stevens tied the set at seven when Diamond issued a kill before the Hawks committed an error. 
  • A kill by Hogan before two errors by Stevens gave Hunter a 12-8 lead. 
  • The Ducks scored 10-straight points to take the lead after three aces from DeBoer, three kills from Frenzel and two kills from Byrne.
  • Following a service error, Byrne and Bittker each issued a kill while Fenzel and Burden blocked an attempt to give Stevens a 23-14 lead. 
  • Bittker and DeBoer each tallied a kill to give the Ducks the second-set victory. 
  • The Hawks took a 12-5 lead following a 5-0 run that included two aces from Shala, a kill by Maisonet and a block by Hogan and Helford.
  • Bittker ended the streak with a kill. 
  • Stevens went on a 5-0 that included a kill from DeBoer and Byrne to come within five points.
  • Hunter extended their lead to six following a kill by Hogan. 
  • After the Hawks committed an attack error, Hunter scored three-straight to end the set. 
  • The Ducks opened the fourth set with a 6-3 lead after DeBoer delivered a kill and Hunter committed two errors. 
  • Shala issued back-to-back kills to bring the Hawks within one. 
  • Two errors by Hunter, a block by Burden and Diamond and another block by Bittker and Diamond gave Stevens a 16-12. 
  • Following a Stevens service error, Maisonet set down a pass from Helford to cut the lead to four. 
  • Bittker collected two kills before Diamond blocked an attempt to give the Ducks a 19-14 lead. 
  • Shala tallied a kill prior to Helford issuing a block to bring Hunter within three points. 
  • Bittker set down a pass from Burden to end the fourth set. 
  • Stevens began the fifth set with a 4-3 lead. 
  • After Hunter tied the set with a block by De Guzman and Helford, the Ducks scored four-straight with one kill apiece from DeBoer, Byrne and Bittker and a Hawks attack error. 
  • Maisonet set down a pass from Helford to bring Hunter within two points.
  • Lehman delivered a kill to give the Ducks a 14-11 lead. 

Match Point (Hunter)
  • Bittker set down a pass from Burden to end the match. 

Volleys and Points (St. Joseph's-LI)
  • Will Flohr delivered a kill for the first point of the match. 
  • Lehman and DeBoer each collected a kill to give Stevens a 3-2 lead. 
  • The Golden Eagles took a one-point lead after two errors by the Ducks. 
  • Two errors by St. Joseph's and a kill from Lehman gave Stevens a two-point edge. 
  • St. Joseph's tied the set at 12 following two Ducks' errors and a block by Flohr and Kyle Biggers. 
  • The Ducks took a 15-12 lead when Frenzel collected a block and Lehman issued a kill. 
  • The teams traded points for the remainder of the set before the Golden Eagles tied the set at 24 when Matthew Amberge set down a pass from Tyler Jones. 
  • Byrne set down a pass from Burden, but St. Joseph's scored the final three points following an error by Stevens, a block by Jones and kill by Curaro. 
  • Stevens started the second stanza with a 7-4 lead following one kill apiece from DeBoer and Lehman and two errors by the Golden Eagles. 
  • St. Joseph's came within two points when Flohr issued a kill and the Ducks tallied an error. 
  • Frenzel and Lehman each collected a kill before an attack error by the Golden Eagles gave Stevens a 17-11 lead. 
  • Biggers and Flohr both delivered a kill prior to an error by Stevens to cut the lead to three. 
  • The Ducks scored the final three points of the set, including two kills from Byrne. 
  • The third set began with an 8-1 run by Stevens that included two kills from Lehman, an ace from Byrne, a block by Lehman, Diamond and DeBoer and another block by Lehman and Frenzel. 
  • Frenzel, Lehman, Byrne and Burden each registered a kill to extend the lead to 10. 
  • After Curaro set down a pass from Jones, Byrne issued back-to-back kills, Burden tallied an ace and the Golden Eagles committed an error, giving Stevens and 18-5 lead. 
  • Byrne delivered a kill before collecting a block with Burden to end the set. 
  • Diamond and Lehman blocked a Flohr attempt to begin the fourth set. 
  • St. Joseph's answered with a kill from Amberge. 
  • After trading points, the Golden Eagles took a 14-10 advantage following two kills from Curaro and a block by Curaro and Cole. 
  • The Ducks trailed by three for the remainder of the set before Biggers and Amberge each set down a pass from Jones to extend their lead to five. 
  • Curaro and Matt Kill each collected a kill and the duo blocked an attempt to send the match to a deciding set. 
  • A kill by Lehman and followed by two attack errors by the Golden Eagles gave Stevens a 5-3 lead to open the final set. 
  • The Ducks then scored five-straight thanks to two kills from Byrne, a kill by Bittker and two St. Joseph's errors. 
  • The Golden Eagles cut their deficit to five after a Curaro kill. 

Match Point (St. Joseph's-LI)
  • Three straight attack errors by the Golden Eagles gave Stevens the final points of the match. 

Inside the Numbers (Hunter)
  • Stevens outhit the Hawks .204 to .194.
  • Each team tallied five blocks. 
  • Hunter registered a .400 hitting percentage in the first set, while the Ducks recorded a .480 hitting percentage in the fourth set.
  • Burden dished out a match-high 53 assists. 
  • Frenzel led all players with five blocks. 
  • DeBoer totaled career-highs of 11 digs and four aces. 

Inside the Numbers (St. Joseph's-LI)
  • The Ducks recorded a hitting percentage of .750 in the second set. 
  • Stevens outhit the Golden Eagles .333 to .076.
  • Lehman registered a career-best eight blocks.
  • DeBoer led in the digs column with nine. 
  • Burden tallied a match-high 48 assists.
