Shanklin and Bednarski Combine for Nine Points as Women’s Lacrosse Holds Off Sewanee 10-8

Shanklin nets four goals, Bednarski scores three times with two assists, but Ducks keep Tigers off the board for 12 minutes in second half to secure the win.

SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 16, 2019)  – Juniors Emily Shanklin and Kyra Bednarski combined for seven goals and two assists as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team defeated Sewanee: University of the South 10-8 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Puett Field.

Shanklin scored four goals and Bednarski contributed three goals and two assists to lead Stevens' offense, while junior Hannah Condren registered her first goal of the season. Freshmen Morgan Westerby and Gale Bennett also found the back of the net for the Ducks, who netted a season-high 10 goals, in snapping their two-game losing streak. Stevens improved to 2-3. Bennett's first-half tally was the first collegiate goal for the Wellesley, Massachusetts native. Freshman Maeve McGovern added an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.

Kelly Thomsen and Hadley Meadows each scored twice for the Tigers, who fell to 8-4. Sewanee has alternated wins and losses over its last four contests. The game marked the first meeting between the programs.

"We are happy with our performance today," said head coach Karen Shaddock. "We had a lot of great moments where we played very well together. We want to continue to work on playing at that level for a full 60 minutes."

One game after setting the program's all-time single-game saves record, sophomore Peyton Taylor made five stops in the cage to earn her first collegiate victory. Amanda James made seven saves for Sewanee.

Condren opened the scoring 2:13 into the game, converting a McGovern pass to beat James. The Walkersville, Maryland native scored 30 goals one season ago. Bennett and Bednarski followed as the Ducks opened a three-goal lead less than 10 minutes into the first half. Meadows scored to halt Stevens' scoring run, but Shanklin completed her second hat trick of the season over a six-minute stretch to push the margin to six. Brooke Winfield and Westerby exchanged goals in the final 100 seconds to give Stevens an 8-2 advantage at halftime. Westerby's marker beat the first-half buzzer to send the teams into the intermission.

Sewanee rebounded to score the first three goals of the second half. Kelly Thomsen beat Taylor to with a short-handed goal to open the sequence and tallies by Meadows and Catherine Crigler drew the Tigers within three.

Stevens responded with consecutive man-advantage goals from Bednarski and Shanklin to push the margin back to five. The goals would be the only goals of the half by the Ducks, as Caroline Roncalli, who came on in relief of Jenkins at halftime made four saves to keep the home team in the contest.

Strand scored with just over 13 minutes left to play in regulation, but the Ducks tightened their play in the midfield and forced eight Sewanee turnovers over the next 12 minutes to secure the victory. Four different Ducks recorded a caused turnover during the game-changing stretch. When the Tigers did successfully venture into the attacking third, Taylor was up to the task, stopping Sewanee's only shot on net during the sequence. The Tigers added a pair of goals in the final 30 seconds to provide the game's final outcome.

For the game, Stevens fired a season-high 30 shots in outshooting Sewanee, 30-19, including a 21-13 edge in shots on goal, which also marked a season high. Stevens continues to be incredibly accurate with 79 percent of the team's shots registering on goal. Individually, Bednarski fired a game-high nine shots, while five different players took two attempts to lead Sewanee.

Defensively, freshmen Natalie Fitzpatrick and Meredith Conlin each caused a game, and career, high four turnovers as the Ducks forced a 34 Sewanee miscues, while committing 23. The 34 miscues are the most by a Stevens opponent this season. Logan Bulls led the Tigers with three caused turnovers. Stevens won the ground ball battle, picking up 31, while Sewanee scooped up 21. Junior Tara Ravoli picked up four ground balls to lead all players, while Fitzpatrick, Conlin, freshman Sam Gadja and senior Regan Littell each picked up three. Gadja was making her collegiate debut in lacrosse and joining Littell in taking to the field in the fall for the field hockey program. Bulls and Hattie Fogarty each picked up three ground balls to lead the Tigers.

Sarah Strand earned five draw controls to help Sewanee edge Stevens 10-9 in the important statistic. Shanklin paced the Ducks with a game-high six draws, with Littell, Bednarski and sophomore Haley Hanrahan each earning one.

Stevens went 19-for-24 on clears, while Sewanee was successful on 18 of its 28 clear attempts. The Ducks scored on two of their eight free-position shots, while the Tigers came up empty on both of their FPS attempts. Shanklin and Bednarski accounted for Stevens' two free-position goals.
