PLANT CITY, Fla. (March 16, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped a 6-4 decision to NYU before defeating Messiah 2-0 Saturday in Plant City, Florida.
Game One (NYU)
The Violets scored their first run in the top of the first when Diana King scored on a passed ball. In the second inning, Ashley Mains was able to touch home plate following a fielding error by the Ducks. Stevens put themselves on the board in the bottom of the inning when junior
Melissa Alfonso stole home.
NYU scored two runs in the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Lauren Kong singled to right field, bringing in Mains before Mary Tindall scored following a throwing error. Claire Stefanelli then hit a homerun in the fourth to extend the Violets' lead to three.
Junior
Gina DeOliveira registered her first RBI of the season when she singled to third base in the sixth inning, sending senior
Katie Tirabassi home. NYU answered in the final inning with a ground out RBI from Kong.
In the bottom of the seventh, freshman
Meg Halloran hit a ground out RBI that brought in sophomore
Siobhan Cottell. In the following play, Tirabassi reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman and senior
Julia DeCandia touched home to cut the deficit to two, but the Violets followed with the final out of the inning to end the game.
Game Two (Messiah)
The Ducks immediately took a 2-0 to start the second game of the day when junior
Samantha Schattin scored following a throwing error by Messiah's pitcher before Tirabassi hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Halloran.
The following innings were scoreless and the game ended after the fifth inning due to rain.
Inside the Numbers
- LaRochelle collected three strikeouts over seven innings while Cappello struck out six in five innings.
- Tirabassi led with 11 putouts against NYU and DeOliveira tallied six in the second game.
- Schattin collected two hits in each game.
