ORLANDO, FLA. (March 17, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology men's tennis put together a masterful performance on Sunday to defeat Hamline University 8-1 and record their first victory of the season. This was the Ducks first match of five that they will be participating in on their Spring Break trip in the Sunshine State. Stevens built a 3-0 lead and never looked back improving their record to 1-4 on the year, Hamline drops to 3-5. "Today was a great start to our spring break," stated Head Coach
Steve Gachko. "It was a collective effort to pull out the 8-1 win."
Sophomore
Bryan Szayna and freshman
Marc Feliu Gomez got the Ducks off to a great start by winning the No. 1 doubles flight 8-4. The sophomore duo of
Mark Kanevsky and Arjun Krishan followed suit with a solid 8-3 victory in second doubles flight against Elias Ramirez and Tou Ger Xiong of Hamline. Freshman
Garrett Kincaid and
Mark-Jonathan Pabalan made it a clean sweep of the double's flights thanks to a decisive 8-2 win and pushing the Ducks lead to 3-0 moving into singles.
The number one singles flight was a premier match up as
Marc Feliu Gomez was pitted against nationally ranked #11 Jake Trondson of Hamline. The standout freshman was up for the task and posted a win over his highly touted competitor 6-3,6-3 proving that he can compete with the best in the country. Coach Gachko was pleased with the effort displayed by Gomez against a top competitor, "
Marc Feliu Gomez pulled off a great straight-set win over the #11 player in the country, Jake Trondson." The Ducks continued to build on the lead thanks to single flight victories by Kanevsky, Krishnan, Pabalan, and Kincaid. "
Garrett Kincaid and Mark Pabalan both earned their first singles and doubles wins of their young careers and helped contribute to the depth at the bottom of our line up," remarked Coach Gachko.
Hamline was almost kept off the scoreboard but a spirited effort by Elias Ramirez kept the Ducks from securing their first shut out of the season. Szayna and Ramierz battled in the second doubles flight which came down to a winner take all third set. Ramierz proved to be too much and completed the comeback against Szayna to secure the only point of the day for Hamline.
