PLANT CITY, Fla. (March 18, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated Messiah College 3-2 in their first game of the day before falling 4-1 to Oswego State in game two on their third day in Florida.
Game One (Messiah)
Messiah took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Erin Cressman singled to left field and pushed Ashley Carroll to third base. Both players then advanced on the throw, allowing Carroll to score the first run of the game.
Cressman advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Haylee Anders before Rianna Trexler hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the second run.
The Ducks weren't able to score until the bottom of the fifth inning. Sophomore
Amanda Delorme singled up the middle before junior
Victoria Kapp and sophomore
Siobhan Cottell both walked to load the bases. Senior
Julia DeCandia then recorded an RBI when she lined out to center field to send in Delorme.
Senior
Samantha Schattin followed with a single up the middle that brought in Kapp. Cottell then scored on an error by the first baseman after a ground out to the pitcher by freshman
Meg Halloran.
Senior
Marissa Cappello struck out six batters on her way to collecting her second victory of the season.
Game Two (Oswego)
The first four innings were scoreless before the Lakers registered four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Erin Sweeney began the scoring for Oswego when she hit a two-run single through the left side. Emily Knowlden followed with another single to send home Leah Czerwinski.
Brianna Harrington capped off the inning with a single to left field, allowing Sweeney to score the final run for the Lakers.
In the top of the sixth, freshman
Lexi Gregule pinch ran for sophomore
Madison Gemma after the Fairfield, New Jersey native hit a double to left field. Gregule then stole third base before scoring on an error by Oswego's catcher.
Christine LaRochelle struck out six batters in the loss. Harrington pitched the first five innings for the Lakers before Rebecca Vilchez took over the mound. Neither pitcher registered a strikeout.
Inside the Numbers
- Schattin led with three hits on the day while Delorme and junior Melissa Alfonso and Gina DeOliveira each tallied two.
- In addition to Gegule's stolen base, Delorme swiped third base against Messiah.
- Gemma's double against Oswego marked her third of the season.
- DeOliveira and Gemma each recorded seven putouts in game one while Alfonso collected seven in game two.
- Today's game against Oswego was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
