PLANT CITY, Fla. (March 19, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team was handed two losses by The College of New Jersey on the Ducks' final day of their Florida Spring Break trip.
Game One (L, 5-1)
Jess McGuire helped give TCNJ an early lead in the first inning after she doubled to left field to send home Katie Wincho. The Lions added their second run in the bottom of the third when McGuire scored following a single by Annalise Sui.
TCNJ registered three runs in the sixth inning to extend their lead to five. Allie Immers hit a two-run single before touching home plate on a sacrifice fly by Helena Coppola.
Freshman
Lexi Gregule scored the lone run for the Ducks in the top of the seventh thanks to a double from sophomore
Amanda Delorme.
Game Two (L, 12-4)
McGuire began the scoring again in the first inning of game two with with an RBI single down the left field line.
Stevens then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second when junior
Melissa Alfonso scored on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded, junior
Samantha Schattin hit a groundout to the second basemen, but was able to send home classmate
Victoria Kapp.
TCNJ immediately took back a one-run lead in the top of the third following an RBI double by Lauren Conroy and an RBI single from McGuire. The Ducks followed with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to take back the lead, thanks to an RBI double from Alfonso before she scored on a single by Kapp.
Immers registered a triple in the fifth prior to scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game at four.
The Lions tallied eight runs in the sixth inning, including a two-run homer from McGuire, to walk away with the victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Sophomore Madison Gemma collected her fourth double of the season in game one.
- Alfonso led the Ducks with five hits on the day.
- Kapp led with five putouts in game one, while freshman Meg Halloran and seniors Katie Tirabassi and Julia DeCandia each tallied four in game two.
- Senior Marissa Cappello dropped to 2-2 after pitching four innings in the first game.
- Sophomore Jessie Masur was dealt her first loss of the season in game two.
