No. 2/No. 4 CNU Blanks Baseball

Strong pitching by the Captains allowed No. 2/No. 4 CNU to shutout the Ducks.

ASHLAND, Va. (March 18, 2019)  – Freshman Sutton Dole registered two hits, but the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team ultimately fell to No. 2/No. 4 Christopher Newport University 3-0 Tuesday afternoon at Captains Park.

Junior Chandler Brierley (0-2) led the Ducks with seven strikeouts on the mound over 4.2 innings. CNU was led by Kyle Darmstead, who pitched five innings and struck out six.

Four of Stevens' batters tallied at least one hit, but were unable to round the bases and score. The Ducks dropped to 3-9 this season.

The Captains saw three players record an RBI, improving their overall record to 14-2.

Conner Clark collected two of CNU's four hits on the day, while registering an RBI and scoring a run. Clark led all players with two stolen bases. Joseph Cutchins and Trey Hicks each added a hit and an RBI in the fifth-straight victory for the Captains.

Dole led Stevens with two hits in the loss. The Houston, Texas native first singled to right field in the top of the second before hitting his first collegiate double in the fourth inning. Junior Patrick Rood and seniors Matt Branco and Matthew Pasko each added a hit for the Ducks.

"Very crisp and well-played game defensively by both sides," stated head baseball coach Kristaps Aldins. "Chandler pitched a good one and our bullpen, Smitty and Roy, kept it close. Although it was another tough loss, it was an effort to be proud of against a talented CNU squad."

Pasko was the only player for the Ducks to snag a base in today's game. The Ringoes, New Jersey native is now 2-for-2 on the basepaths this season.
