WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 24, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team defeated the College of Staten Island in both games of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
Senior
Christine LaRochelle (1-4) pitched game one and tallied seven strikeouts. Classmate
Marissa Cappello (3-2) took over the mound for game two and struck out a season-best 10 batters for the Ducks, who improved to 5-7 on the year.
Jaclyn Kateridge (0-10) was dealt both losses on the day after pitching 7.1 innings in the first game and 3.0 in the second. The Dolphins fell to an overall record of 0-10.
Game One (W, 5-4)
Staten Island scored the first run of the game when Sierra Kaplanek hit a single that dropped into left-center field and brought in J. Kateridge.
The following two innings were scoreless until junior
Gina DeOliveira hit a sacrifice fly to center field to send home freshman
Lexi Gregule in fourth inning.
The Dolphins answered in the top of the fifth after Erica Olsen reached base on an error and allowed Patricia Riches to score. Alexa Venditti followed with an RBI single to give Staten Island the advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, sophomore
Amanda Delorme singled to left field before junior
Samantha Schattin brought her home on a triple to cut the Ducks' deficit to one run.
After senior
Katie Tirabassi hit a triple of her own, sophomore
Madison Gemma recorded an RBI single to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Following a scoreless seventh inning, J. Kateridge grounded out to the second baseman but was able to bring in her sister Alexis Kateridge to give CSI a one-run lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.
DeOliveira recorded her second RBI of the game when she doubled up the middle. Junior
Melissa Alfonso then hit a walk-off RBI single to give Stevens their first win of the day.
Game Two (W, 4-0)
Tirabassi gave Stevens the first run in game two with a homerun to left-center field in the first inning. Delorme followed with a single in the second inning that allowed Alfonso to score run number two.
The Ducks added the final two runs in the third inning thanks to a groundout RBI from DeOliveira and an RBI double by Alfonso.
Staten Island had the chance to score in the top of the sixth following singles from J. Kateridge, Antoinette Galbo and Riches loaded the bases. Kaplanek then reached on a fielder's choice after she sent the ball third base. Tirabassi fielded the ball before throwing to Alfonso at the plate to tag J. Kateridge for the out.
Inside the Numbers
- DeOliveira led the Ducks with three RBI on the day.
- Tirabassi's homer was her first of the season.
- Gregule snagged a base in each game.
- Alfonso went 5-for-6 on the day, while Gemma went 4-for-5.
- Sophomore Ada Heinze recorded her first hit of the season in game two.

- "Our pitching staff threw well today," reflected head coach Emily Kaczmarek. "We had some timely hitting that scored some runs but we still have some work to do."
