WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (March 27, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team fell 3-1 in game one against New York University before winning the second game 2-1 in eight innings at Weehawken Waterfront Park Wednesday afternoon.
Senior
Christine LaRochelle (1-5) was dealt the loss of the first game despite striking out five batters in 7.0 innings. Classmate
Marissa Cappello (4-2) struck out five in 8.0 innings to earn the victory of game two.
Karissa Zubalake (3-1) pitched the first game for the Violets and tallied seven strikeouts on her way to earning the win. Maggie Swan (3-1) was handed her first loss on the mound even though she struck out seven batters in 7.1 innings.
Game One (L, 3-1)
NYU scored the first run of the game in the top of the fourth when Kalena Paredes hit an RBI double to center field.
In the top of the seventh, Diana King singled up the middle before stealing second base. Serena Ponciano then sent home King with her base hit to left-center field. Claire Stefanelli followed with an RBI single to left field to give NYU a two-run lead.
The Ducks answered in the bottom of the seventh thanks to an RBI single by senior
Julia DeCandia that brought in junior
Victoria Kapp. Stevens had a chance to either tie the game or take the lead with runners at second and third, but freshman
Meg Halloran sent the ball to the shortstop who tossed it to the third baseman for the final out of the game.
Game Two (W, 2-1)
Game two was sent into an extra frame after seven scoreless innings. With Ponciano placed on second to start the eighth, Stefanelli singled to push the runner to third. Ashley Mains then reached on a fielder's choice as Stefanelli was tagged out at second, but Ponciano was able to score the first run of the game.
With Kapp placed on second, sophomore
Siobhan Cottell reached first base on a throwing error by the catcher before advancing to second and allowing Kapp to score on the play. Cottell then reached third base following a passed ball before freshman
Lexi Gregule came in to pinch run.
DeCandia and junior
Samantha Schattin loaded the bases after each were intentionally walked. Halloran then reached first on a fielder's choice, as the third baseman threw home to tag out Gregule and prevent the winning run.
With a 1-2 count, senior
Katie Tirabassi singled down the left field line to send home DeCandia and give Stevens the victory of game two.
Inside the Numbers
- Tirabassi led the Ducks with five hits over the two games.
- DeCandia stole a base in game two.
- Tirabassi collected 13 putouts on the day while Alfonso added 10.
- Junior Samantha Schattin worked a walk in both of her at bats in game two.
- Kapp scored one run in each game.
