Cal Lutheran Upsets No. 4 Men’s Volleyball

No. 4 men's volleyball fell to California Lutheran University in five sets Friday evening.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 29, 2019)  – Junior David Lehman recorded a career-high 30 kills, but the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology men's volleyball team fell to California Lutheran University in five sets (23-25, 26-28, 25-19, 25-12, 7-15) at Canavan Arena Friday evening. 

Senior Joshua Hinton led all players with his career-high 23 digs as the Ducks fell to 22-3 on the year. 

Cal Lutheran was paced by Justin Dietrich with 15 kills. The Kingsmen improved to 12-9 this season. 

Volleys and Points
  • The Ducks opened the match with a 6-3 lead as Lehman, senior Cooper Diamond, junior Jonathan Frenzel and sophomores Jack Bittker and Ryan Byrne each collected their first kill of the night. 
  • Two errors by Stevens brought Cal Lutheran within one point. 
  • Following an attack error by the Kingsmen, Kelly Jew and Connor Hinthorn each tallied a kill to put Cal Lutheran in the lead. 
  • Stevens took back the lead when Lehman issued a kill before assisting Frenzel on a block. 
  • A kill by Dasmen Stewart and a Stevens' error put the Kingsmen up 13-12.
  • The Ducks then took a 19-16 lead after another kill from Lehman and two errors by Cal Lutheran. 
  • The Kingsmen were able to tie the match when Dietrich and Stewart each set down a pass prior to an attack error by Stevens. 
  • After a kill by Lehman, Cal Lutheran scored the next four points to take a 23-20 lead. 
  • Despite kills from Lehman and Bittker, Andrew Reina delivered a kill to give the Kingsmen the first set victory. 
  • Stevens began the second set with a 6-3 before Cal Lutheran tied it up on a block by Dietrich and Grant Nelson. 
  • Two errors by the Ducks gave the Kingsmen the lead before Byrne delivered two kills and Frenzel and Lehman collected a block, giving Stevens a one-point edge. 
  • The teams traded points before Cal Lutheran committed two errors and put the Ducks up 18-15. 
  • The Kingsmen then climbed their way back to be just one point behind after a block by Kelly Jew and Nick Christy. 
  • Lehman set down a pass from senior Jacob Patterson to give the Ducks a 24-22 lead. 
  • Jew then answered with a kill before helping Dietrich on a block to tie the set at 24. 
  • After a kill by Bittker, Dietrich set down a pass and Stevens committed an error to put Cal Lutheran up 26-25. 
  • Lehman fought back with a kill, but Dietrich issued a kill before Hinthorn delivered an ace to win the second set. 
  • An error by Stevens, a kill from Reina and an ace by Stewart gave Cal Lutheran a 3-0 start to the third set. 
  • Lehman put the Ducks on the board after setting down a pass from Burden. 
  • The Kingsmen kept their lead as the teams traded points before a 4-0 run gave Stevens and 11-9 lead. 
  • Cal Lutheran then tied the set at 12 with a kill from Reina. 
  • Two attack errors by the Kingsmen and kills from Lehman and senior Dylan DeBoer put the Ducks up 16-12.
  • The teams once again traded points until Frenzel and Byrne collected a block and Dietrich committed an error to give Stevens a 23-18 advantage. 
  • Lehman and Byrne ended the set with one kill apiece. 
  • Stevens jumped on a 6-2 lead to start the fourth set as Byrne tallied three kills, Lehman issued two and DeBoer collected one. 
  • Stewart ended Stevens' run with a kill. 
  • Following kills from Byrne and Frenzel, Brendan Ward delivered two consecutive kills to cut the lead to three. 
  • Cal Lutheran shortened the deficit to one after the Ducks committed three-straight errors. 
  • The Ducks took a 20-17 lead after a kill from DeBoer, two blocks by Diamond and DeBoer and another block by the duo of Diamond and Burden. 
  • Dietrich set down a pass from Nelson before Lehman committed an error to allow the Kingsmen to come within two points. 
  • Stevens then led 23-19 when Hinthorn committed a service ace before Lehman set down a Burden pass. 
  • Cal Lutheran fought to stay within two points as Stewart collected a kill and Reina and Ward registered a block. 
  • Byrne and Frenzel each recorded blocks to send the match to a deciding set. 
  • The Kingsmen took the first three points of the final set following a Ducks error and back-to-back kills from Stewart. 
  • Lehman put Stevens on the board when he set down a pass from Burden. 
  • Dietrich answered with a kill before Diamond and Lehman blocked an attempt by Stewart.
  • Cal Lutheran then scored four consecutive points that included a Dietrich kill and three-straight blocks. 
  • Lehman ended the run with a kill. 
  • Reina followed with two kills to extend the Kingsmen lead to eight. 
  • Lehman delivered two more kills before DeBoer set down a pass from Burden to help the Ducks try and climb their way back. 

Match Point
  • Stewart issued a kill for the final point of the match. 

Inside the Numbers
  • The Ducks outhit Cal Lutheran .300 to .234. However, the Kingsmen held Stevens to a .056 percentage in the final set while they registered a .600.
  • Stevens held the edge in kills (75-62), assists (75-59) and digs (67-55), all of which were season-bests for the Ducks. 
  • Cal Lutheran led in both the aces and blocks columns.
  • Lehman collected Stevens lone ace of the match. 
  • Frenzel led recorded a match-high five blocks while Lehman and Diamond added four apiece. 
  • Frenzel also led with a .545 hitting percentage, totaling seven kills on 11 attempts.
