HOBOKEN, N.J. (March 30, 2019) – Five players registered homeruns as the Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team defeated St. John Fisher College 16-10 Saturday evening at Dobbelaar Field.
Junior
Chandler Brierley earned his second win on the mound after pitching five innings and striking out six batters. The Ducks improved to 8-10 on the year and 5-1 in the Empire 8.
Matthew Raudelunas was dealt his second loss of the year after giving up six runs in 2.2 innings. The Cardinals are now 10-6 this season and 2-1 in conference action.
"Really nice win tonight to open the series against St. John Fisher," stated head coach
Kristaps Aldins. "Our offense took an outstanding approach most of the night. The challenge for our team will be to press the repeat button and bring the same energy tomorrow. We look forward to seeing it happen and continuing to get better."
The Ducks scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning when graduate student
Tommy Baronner hit a single in the infield to allow sophomore
Thomas Paulich to score. Junior
A.J. Falconite then hit a sac-fly to right field as senior
Carlos Leon scored on the play.
St. John Fisher tied the game in the top of the third after Allen Murphy registered a two-run triple to center field. Stevens answered in the bottom of the inning with five runs as Falconite totaled two RBI while Paulich, Baronner and freshman
Sutton Dole each batted in a run.
Stevens then added four runs in the fourth when senior
Donny Gherardi homered before Leon hit a sacrifice bunt to bring in junior
Patrick Rood. Senior
Matthew Pasko then hit the second homerun of the inning with Paulich on base to put the Ducks up 11-2.
Antony Mantova hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth to help shorten the Cardinals' deficit. However, a homerun from Falconite and an RBI groundout by Rood in the bottom of the inning allowed the Ducks to keep a comfortable lead.
After Jack Kelleher was hit by a pitch to reach base in the sixth inning, Stephen Edgett singled to left field before being able to advance to third on a fielding error by Dole and allow Kelleher to score. Edgett then scored following a groundout by Justin Graham.
Dole tallied Stevens' fourth homer of the game in the bottom of the inning, giving the Ducks an eight-run lead. Leon then registered the final Ducks homerun of the game in the seventh inning as he hit a two-run rocket over the fence.
Thomas DiPasquale hit the lone homerun for St. John Fisher in the ninth inning before Edgett registered a three-run double in hopes to spark a rally for the Cardinals. Kurt Forsell then hit the ball to Pasko at shortstop who tossed it Leon at second to tag Graham for the final out of the game.
