SPARKS GLENCOE, Md. (March 6, 2019) – The ninth-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team scored five times in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Ducks fell to Roanoke College 12-10 Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference, neutral-site matchup at U.S. Lacrosse's Tierney Field.
Senior
Max Bailey and sophomore
Ryan Gebhardt each netted a pair of goals for the Ducks, who saw their three-game winning streak come to an end. Stevens fell to 3-1.
Peter Lindley scored six times and Jason Sarro added a hat trick for the Maroons, who evened their record at 2-2. It was the first meeting between the teams since March 10, 2002.
"I don't think we did a great job of playing a full game today," said head coach
Gene Peluso. "I thought our fourth quarter was very good, but too little, too late, as they say. Hats off to Roanoke and their goalie."

Ryan Caplis also scored twice for the Ducks, who recorded 10 or more goals for the fourth straight game. Junior
Brendan Monteleone had a goal and an assist, while senior
Dean Peluso also found the back of the net for the third time in four games. Freshman
Brendan Sullivan had an assist to round out Stevens' scoring.
Ian Davies made 22 saves, including nine in the final period, to earn the victory for Roanoke. Senior
Carson White totaled nine saves for the Ducks.
For the third consecutive game, Stevens that jumped on the board first, despite the opposing team winning the opening faceoff. Heckler won the opening draw, with Sam Balch scooping up the ground ball to secure the possession. Wyatt Naylor took the first shot of the game, firing it well wide of the cage. Roanoke turned the ball over after the restart and the Ducks were successful on the game's first clear attempt.
Stevens went into its offense and Caplis was able to find the back of the cage on the Ducks' first shot of the contest. The Mooresville, North Carolina native registered 12 goals in 2018.
The Ducks had a chance to increase their lead after taking the next possession after a Roanoke faceoff violation. Radbourne worked himself into scoring position and fired a shot that Davies redirected. Monteleone pounced on the rebound and fired it towards the cage, but the Roanoke goalie pushed it aside for his second save of the game.
Brendan Devane was able to even the score on Roanoke's second shot of the game, but Gebhardt beat Davies 54 seconds later to put Stevens back in front. The Baldwinsville, New York native has scored at least one goal in 24 of his 25 games on Castle Point.
Lindley beat White to again even the teams, before Sarro tallied his first of the game to put Roanoke in front. Monteleone and Lindley alternated goals to close out a seven-goal first quarter.
Sarro and Radbourne exchanged goals to open the second period, before the Maroons went on a four-goal run to open a 9-4 advantage midway through the third stanza. Peluso stopped the Roanoke offense with his fifth of the season, before Lindley and Devane scored to give Roanoke its largest lead of the game.
Caplis scored his second of the game to spark Stevens' comeback attempt and Radbourne and Bailey beat Davies with unassisted goals to draw Stevens within three, before Bailey netted his second of the game to trim the margin to two. Bailey's two-goal day drew the Millersville, Maryland to within five points of Hall of Famer J.R. Maehler atop the career scoring list.
Lindley's final marker of the game slowed the Ducks' momentum and reclaimed a three-goal lead for the Maroons. Gebhardt beat Davies for the second time to provide new life for the Ducks, but Davies stopped a pair of a Stevens scoring attempts over the final 5:58 to preserve the victory. Gebhardt rang one off the post on the Ducks' final shot of the day.
Stevens outshot Roanoke, 47-34 on the day, including a 32-21 margin in shots on goal. The Ducks fired 32 shots on goal for the second straight game. Lindley recorded a game-high 13 shots, while Bailey had 10 attempts to lead the Ducks
Defensively, Tim Aldinger led all players with four caused turnovers. For the game, Stevens forced 17 Roanoke miscues, while committing 14. The Ducks out-earned the Maroons 40-32 in ground balls, with Gebhardt scooping up a career-high seven to lead all players. Sophomore
Sean Scadden picked up five as 16 different players recorded at least one. Sarro was one of three Roanoke players to pick up four ground balls. Junior
Connor Murphy had a career day in the 'X', winning nine out of a possible 12 faceoffs, helping Stevens to a 16-10 record for the day. John Heckler had seven of Roanoke's nine wins. Senior
Nicholas Carnovale recorded the other seven Stevens victories in the 'X'.

Connor Murphy was a bright spot for us today, as he competed at faceoffs," Peluso added.
Stevens went 15-for-19 on clears, while Roanoke went 17-for-25. Stevens went 1-for-4 on extra-man opportunities with Gebhardt recording the lone marker in the final quarter. The Ducks successfully killed off both of Roanoke's man-up advantages.
