Women’s Lacrosse Tripped Up By Dickinson 17-10

Shanklin nets a season-high five goals, but Ducks can't overcome Dickinson's second-half run.

CARLISLE, Pa. (March 6, 2019)  – Junior Emily Shanklin netted five goals, but a key five-goal stretch in the second half led Dickinson College over the Stevens Institute of Technology women's lacrosse team 17-10 Wednesday in a non-conference game at Biddle Field.

Kyra Bednarski scored twice and freshmen Natalie Fitzpatrick, Morgan Westerby and Maeve McGovern also scored for Stevens, who fell to 1-2.

Sam Marmo netted four goals to lead nine different Red Devils with at least one goal. Dickinson improved to 3-0. It was the first meeting between the teams since May 11, 2008.

"We are still very young and growing as a team. Tonight, that was apparent," said head coach Karen Shaddock. "Tonight's game gives us a lot to work on. We are going to continue to get better and focus on Saturday."

Drew Yager made five saves to earn the victory for Dickinson. Sophomore Olivia Demetres made a career-high 10 saves for the Ducks, but suffered the loss.

Marmo opened scoring just 66 seconds into the game, beating Demetres to give the hosts a 1-0 lead. Although Dickinson earned the next draw, Shanklin stripped Maddie Parker and carried the ball onto Stevens' side of the field and beat Yager to even the game.

Anne Dunster put Dickinson back in front 67 seconds later and the Red Devils would score the next five goals to take a 7-1 lead. Shanklin beat Yager for the second time to slow down the home team and the Ducks would go on to score three of the next four to pull within 8-5. Westerby opened the stretch with her second career goal, with markers from Fitzpatrick and Bednarski providing life to Stevens' side of the field.

With the first-half clock winding down, however, Parker found the back of the net with just four seconds remaining to give the Red Devils a four-goal lead at the intermission. The goal would prove to be pivotal as Stevens would score three of first four goals to open the second half to trim the margin to two.

Following Shanklin's hat trick goal, Chase Landis and Dunster scored 45 seconds apart to give Dickinson a little breathing room. Sam Marmo scored an 'Up' goal and Erike Bloes added a pair of goals as the Red Devils built a 15-8 advantage.

Shanklin and McKenzie Rambusch alternated the final four goals of the game to provide the final margin. Shanklin's five-goal performance was two shy of her career high, set last season against Hartwick.

For the game, Stevens was outshot by Dickinson, 35-17, although 15 of the Ducks' 17 attempts were on net. For the season, 87 percent of Stevens' shot attempts are registering on-cage. Individually, Marmo led all players with seven shots, while Shanklin paced Stevens with six.

Defensively, Dickinson's Mindy Corney led all players with four caused turnovers. For the game, the Red Devils forced 20 Stevens miscues, while the Ducks forced 12 turnovers. The Red Devils out-earned the Ducks 15-11 in ground balls, with Corney, Laurie Travaglini and senior Regan Littell scooping up a three to lead all players.

Shanklin paced the Ducks with five draw controls, although Dickinson edged Stevens 15-13 for the game. Sophomore Tori Bruce earned four draws for the Ducks, with Littell, Westerby, junior Brianne Salera and sophomore Haley Hanrahan each earning one. Parker earned eight draws to lead all players.

Stevens went 14-for-16 on clears, while Dickinson went 13-for-17. The Ducks scored on five of their seven free-position shots, while the Red Devils went 3-for-6. Shanklin went a perfect 2-for-2, while Bednarski, Westerby and Fitzpatrick each added one. Parker, Landis and Travaglini accounted for Dickinson's.

Up Next: Women's Lacrosse travels south to Glassboro, New Jersey Saturday for a non-conference matchup with No. 23 Rowan University. The Ducks and the Profs were slated to play on Mar. 2 in Hoboken, but the game was rescheduled because of snow. Stevens is 11-5 all-time against Rowan, including wins in three of the last four meetings.
