CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (April 10, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology split a non-conference doubleheader against DeSales University Wednesday afternoon at McGettigan Park.
Game One (L, 2-1)
Heather Hall (4-6) earned the win on the mound with her three strikeouts over six innings. Julia Testagrose was credited with the save as she took over in the seventh inning with one runner on base.
Sophomore
Jessie Masur was handed the loss despite striking out seven batters in five innings.
Reilly Kerr put the Bulldogs on the board in the first inning with her RBI single to left field. Kerr added DeSales second and final run of the game when she homered in the bottom of the fourth.
Junior
Samantha Schattin registered her first hit of the game in the sixth inning to get on base before advancing to second on a sac-bunt by freshman
Meg Halloran. Senior
Katie Tirabassi followed with a groundout to the third baseman that allowed Schattin to reach third before DeSales' first baseman committed a throwing error, which allowed the Princeton Junction, New Jersey native to give the Ducks their first run of the day.
In the top of the seventh, both juniors
Gina DeOliveira and
Melissa Alfonso walked before classmate
Victoria Kapp pushed Alfonso and pinch runner
Lexi Gregule to second and third on a sac-bunt, giving Stevens the opportunity to tie or take the lead with just one out.
However, junior
Abigail Circelli fouled the ball into the catcher's mitt before Testagrose recorded her only strikeout of the day to end the game.
Game Two (W, 4-1)
Masur (2-2) registered the win of game two as she took over the mound in the bottom of the fourth to strikeout two batters in one inning. Senior
Christine LaRochelle pitched the final three innings to earn the save while totaling to strikeouts.
Jill Harrison fell to 1-4 on the year after allowing five hits and giving up two runs.
Erin Redden was the first player to reach base after getting hit by a pitch in the bottom of the first. Redden then stole second before Kerr singled to left field and then advanced to second on the throw, allowing the runner to score.
DeOliveira hit her first double of the day to begin the fourth inning. Circelli followed with both her first hit and RBI of the season as she singled through the left side to bring in DeOliveira. Schattin then sent Circelli home on her base hit to left field to give Stevens the lead.
Tirabassi opened up the fifth inning with a single before sophomore
Madison Gemma sent the ball over the right field fence for a two-run home run.
The Bulldogs had the chance to cut the lead in the bottom of the seventh after singles from Aubree Fritzinger and Leann Panconi put two runners on base, but both Kerr and Caitlyn Newsom flied out to Halloran in center field to end the game.
Inside the Numbers
- Halloran snagged two bases in game one.
- DeOliveira and Circelli lead with two hits apiece in game two, while Halloran collected two in the first game.
- Circelli was behind the plate in both games for the first time this season as she totaled 17 putouts across the two contests.
- Halloran leads both the Ducks and the E8 in sacrifice bunts with eight.
