ELMIRA, N.Y. (April 13, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept Elmira College in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Eldridge Park.
Game One (W, 3-1)
Senior
Christine LaRochelle earned her third win on the mound with seven strikeouts over 7.0 innings. Mckenzie Slaven was dealt the loss despite striking out five batters.
Junior
Samantha Schattin hit a leadoff triple to open up game one. Senior
Katie Tirabassi followed with an RBI double to give Stevens a 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
In both of Schattin's next two at bats, the Princeton Junction, New Jersey native doubled to left center. Following her hit in the top of the sixth, freshman
Meg Halloran reached first after an error by Slaven, pushing Schattin to third.
With two outs, junior
Melissa Alfonso hit a two-run single to center field to send home both runners to extend the Ducks lead.
Rachel Katzenberger began the bottom of the inning with a single to center field before Sarah Garner was hit by a pitch in the next at bat to push Katzenberger to second. Both runners then advanced on a wild pitch. Sam Chadbourne followed with an RBI single to put the Soaring Eagles on the board.
In the seventh inning, Schattin collected her fourth hit in her fourth trip to the plate with a single through the right side. With two outs, Halloran grounded out to the pitcher to end the top of the inning.
Two groundouts by Elmira and LaRochelle's final strikeout ended the first game of the day.
Game Two (W, 5-0)
Senior
Marissa Cappello collected 11 strikeouts over 7.0 innings and allowed just three hits to register her eighth win of the year. Ally Barr fell to 3-5 after giving up five runs throughout the game.
Schattin was the first Duck to reach base following an error by Elmira's second baseman before stealing second in the top of the first. Halloran then worked a walk prior to junior
Gina DeOliveira hitting a sac-bunt to advance both runners.
Tirabassi followed with a sac-fly to bring in Schattin for the first run of game two. Alfonso followed with a double to right field to give Stevens a 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning.
DeOliveira registered her first hit of the day with a double in the top of the second. Tirabassi brought her teammate in when she reached on an error by the left fielder before advancing to second.
In the seventh inning, Schattin reached on an error and Halloran singled to center field to put two runners on base. With DeOliveira at the plate, Schattin stole third while Halloran snagged second. Schattin then scored when DeOliveira reached following another error by the Soaring Eagles.
With runners on first and third, Tirabassi sent the first pitch she saw to left center for a double before advancing to third on the throw. Halloran scored, but DeOliveira was tagged out at home plate.
Inside the Numbers
- Schattin stole two bases in game two, while Halloran and sophomore Amanda Delorme eached stole one.
- Alfonso and Tirabassi collected two RBI in game one and game two, respectively.
- Schattin amassed four runs over both games.
- Alfonso led with 15 putouts on the day, while Tirabassi totaled eight in game one and sophomore Siobhan Cottell tallied six in game two.
