UTICA, N.Y. (April 14, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology defeated Utica College 2-0 in game one and 9-0 (five innings) in game two in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader at Greenman Field Sunday morning.
The Ducks improved to 15-11 on the year and 7-1 in conference play, while the Pioneers fell to 10-16 overall and 3-7 in the E8.
Game One (W, 2-0)
Senior
Christine LaRochelle (4-7) totaled four strikeouts and allowed just two hits over her 7.0 innings on the mound. Gabby Caccamo fell to 5-6 after giving up six hits and two runs.
Neither team recorded a hit until junior
Victoria Kapp and senior
Julia DeCandia each recorded singles in the top of the third, but the Ducks were unable to score and ended the inning with one runner left on base.
The Ducks finally put themselves on the board in the sixth inning with an RBI single from freshman
Meg Halloran that sent home pinch runner
Lexi Gregule. Senior
Katie Tirabassi followed with her own RBI single to bring in Halloran.
After the Pioneers began the bottom of the inning with a groundout and a pop up, Nicole Rice and Jacqueline Aronin each singled to give Utica a chance to tie the game. However, Kaitlyn Paul fouled towards first base, where Tirabassi was able to snag the ball for the final out of the inning.
Game Two (W, 9-0)
Senior
Marissa Cappello (8-2) earned the game two win with her seven strikeouts in just 5.0 innings. Alyssa Samborin fell to 3-6 despite striking out four batters in 3.0 innings pitched.
In the top of the third, junior
Samantha Schattin walked before advancing to second on a bunt by Halloran. Schattin then recorded her second stolen base of the game as she snagged third. Junior
Gina DeOliveira followed with an RBI double to left field to bring in both runners. Junior
Melissa Alfonso then brought in her classmate for the final run of the inning with her RBI single to right center.
DeCandia and Halloran each collected an RBI groundout in the fourth inning to extend the Ducks' lead to five.
Junior
Abigail Circelli registered her second hit of the day with an RBI single to give Stevens their first run of the fifth inning. DeCandia recorded another RBI groundout before Schattin hit a two-run single to give the Ducks a 9-0 lead.
After Madison Judge doubled in the bottom of the inning, Cappello struck out three-straight batters to end the game and allow Stevens to walk away with the run-rule victory.
Inside the Numbers
- Schattin stole three bases in game two while going 3-for-3 at the plate.
- Circelli collected three hits over the two games.
