Late Run Sends SUNY Canton Past Baseball

Canton's Ben Miller hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to send the Roos past Stevens.

CANTON, N.Y. (April 14, 2019)  – The Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to SUNY Canton 7-6 Sunday morning in Empire 8 Conference play as the Roos recorded a run in the bottom of the ninth to break the tie and top the Ducks.

Junior Chandler Brierley led Stevens with 11 strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Sophomore Roy Iversen (4-4) was dealt the loss following his 3.2 innings pitched as the go-ahead run was registered during his time on the mound.

Zack Newman (2-2) earned the win for Canton as he struck out two batters in 2.0 innings.

"Disappointing result today, there is no other way to sum it up," expressed head coach Kristaps Aldins. "We have a few more weeks left to figure some things out so that our group can be playing our best baseball at the end of the year. We all know that this is something that this team is capable of."

The Ducks scored the first runs of the game in the top of the second inning when senior Matthew Pasko hit a two-run single through the right side. Graduate student Tommy Baronner followed with an RBI as he reached first on a fielding error before junior A.J. Falconite sent in the final run of the inning with a single to right field.

Brett Hoberman brought in the Roos' first run of the day on an RBI single through the right side in the bottom of the third inning. Canton then cut the lead to one run in the following inning with a sac-fly from Edward Molinski, Jr. prior to Jesus Garcia stealing home.

In the top of the fifth, senior Matt Branco recorded an RBI double down the left field line. Senior Carlos Leon then extended Stevens' lead to three with an RBI groundout that sent home freshman Ryan Finegan

After a scoreless sixth inning, Joseph Campbell scored on a wild pitch before Hoberman hit a two-run single out to left field to tie the game.

Ben Miller ended the game with his walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Roos their first conference win of the season.
