CALDWELL, N.J. (April 14, 2019) – Junior
David Lehman tied for a match-high 19 kills, but No. 4 Men's Volleyball fell to No. 9 New Paltz 3-1 (21-25, 24-26, 25-14, 25-27) Sunday afternoon in the United Volleyball Conference Championship match at Caldwell University.
Senior
Cooper Diamond led the Ducks with six blocks as Stevens fell to 27-5 on the year.
New Paltz was led by Nick Smith with 19 kills and Tevin Skeete with nine blocks. The Hawks improved to 24-7 overall and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Tournament.
Volleys and Points
- Matthew Grace and Smith each delivered a kill to open the match.
- Diamond set down a pass from junior Grant Burden to put Stevens on the board.
- The Hawks took a 7-2 lead after Skeete and Bradley Schneider collected a block and Skeete issued a kill.
- A service error by New Paltz and a kill by sophomore Jack Bittker cut the lead to three.
- Two errors by the Ducks and a block by John Ronan and Aaron Carrk put the Hawks up 14-7.
- New Paltz committed two errors and sophomore Ryan Byrne recorded a kill before collecting a block with Diamond to bring Stevens within two points.
- After Schneider set down a pass from Grace, Diamond and Byrne registered another kill before Lehman cut the lead to one with a kill.
- Carrk, Ronan and Schneider each delivered a kill to give the Hawks a 22-18 advantage.
- A kill by Diamond and an error by Smith brought the Ducks back within two.
- Carrk set down a pass before Skeete and Schneider tallied another block to win set one.
- The Hawks began the second set with a 3-1 edge before Stevens tied it on a Lehman kill and an error by Schneider.
- The Ducks then took a one-point lead after another kill by Lehman and an error by New Paltz.
- The teams traded points while staying within one point of each other before Schneider and Smith set down passes from Grace and Schneider issued an ace to put the Hawks up 15-13.
- Stevens answered with one kill apiece from Lehman and Bittker to tie the set once again.
- After a service error by Grace and a block by Lehman and Diamond forced New Paltz to take a timeout, Smith immediately issued a kill before Ronan and Schneider blocked an attempt by Diamond to tie the set at 19.
- New Paltz then took a 23-21 lead as the duo of Skeete and Schneider recorded a block and Carrk collected a kill.
- Two errors by the Hawks allowed Stevens to tie the set.
- Schneider delivered a kill before Lehman answered with a kill of his own to keep the set tied.
- Smith set down a pass from Grace prior to collecting a block with Ronan to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third set.
- The Ducks took a 5-3 lead at the start of the third stanza as Diamond delivered an ace and junior Jonathan Frenzel and Lehman collected a block.
- A kill by Carrk and a block by Skeete and Schneider brought New Paltz within one point.
- Three errors by the Hawks and a kill from Byrne gave Stevens a five-point advantage.
- New Paltz cut the lead to three with a kill by Carrk and a block by Ronan and Smith.
- Lehman registered a kill before Bittker issued back-to-back kills to put the Ducks up 16-10.
- Smith and Schneider came out of a timeout and each set down a pass from Grace.
- Three more errors by New Paltz and a block by Frenzel and Bittker gave Stevens and eight-point lead.

- The Ducks tied the set at eight following a service error by the Hawks and a kill by Lehman.
- Schneider set down a pass from Grace before Dan LaRosa served two consecutive aces to give New Paltz a three-point edge.
- Stevens worked to come back within one point as Lehman tallied another kill, but Skeete issued a kill and Schneider delivered an ace in attempt to distance themselves from the Ducks.
- Two errors by the Hawks kept Stevens within one point.
- The Ducks then took a one-point lead when Byrne collected a kill and a block.
- Carrk collected a kill before Stevens registered an error to put New Paltz back up by one.
- A kill by Diamond and an ace from senior Niko Lambert put the Ducks up 24-23.
- After both teams committed a service error, Schneider delivered a kill and Skeete and Smith blocked an attempt by Lehman to give the Hawks a 26-25 advantage.
Match Point
- Skeete and Smith registered another block to end the match and allow New Paltz to become UVC Champions.

- The Ducks registered a .435 hitting percentage in the third set while holding New Paltz to .094.
- Grace dished out a match-high 52 assists.
- Smith led all players with his .357 hitting percentage and was named Most Valuable Player of the UVC Tournament.

- Senior Joshua Hinton recorded a match-high 15 digs.
- Byrne and Bittker both added nine digs.
