No. 11/No. 10 Men’s Lacrosse Wins 10th Straight With 19-1 Victory Over Elmira

Ryan and Kunz power the offense as Ducks move to 13-2 on the year.

HOBOKEN, N.Y. (April 17, 2019)  – Freshman Tyler Ryan recorded a career-high six points and sophomore Sean Kunz added three goals and five assists for a career-high eight points to lead No. 11/No. 10 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse over Elmira College 19-1 Wednesday in an Empire 8 Conference matchup at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.

Freshman Joe Ballai totaled two goals and two assists and classmate Brendan Sullivan finished with two goals and an assist as the Ducks improved to 13-2 overall and to 6-0 in the Empire 8. Stevens has won 10 straight games and the victory was the Ducks' 16th consecutive league victory (including the postseason).

"A nice effort by our guys today to play hard and get another conference win," said head coach Gene Peluso. "We received a solid game from Kunz and Ryan on the offensive side and were really pleased with the effort from Conway on the defensive and Kiessling at the X."

Sam Shaw had the lone marker for the Soaring Eagles, who fell to 2-11 on the year. Elmira remains winless in league games. Stevens improved to 12-0 all-time against the Soaring Eagles.

Freshman Grant Petracca earned the victory in his first career start. Classmate Gio Garcia relieved and made a pair of saves. Jacob Mattice, among the national leaders in saves, made 13 stops in defeat for Elmira.

Junior Max Ranaldi had a goal and an assist and freshman Jackson Brown had a pair of goals for the Ducks, who saw 12 different players record a point. Freshman Hunter Brogan and sophomore Trevor Kiessling each had a goal and an assist, while freshmen Michael Burns, Henry Johnson and Craig Stockfeder each found the back of the net for the Ducks, who have reached double figures in goals in every contest this season. Kiessling's fourth-quarter marker was the Annapolis, Maryland native's first of the season. Sophomore Tim Spears dished out two assists to round out Stevens' scoring.

"I was happy to get some of our younger players a chance to play today and was impressed with their production," Peluso added.

With the victory, Peluso tied Hall of Famer John Sim atop the program's all-time career victories leaderboard. Peluso can break the record Saturday if the Ducks defeat St. John Fisher on Senior Day.

Kunz and Ryan totaled seven of their combined 14 points in the opening stanza. Kunz opened scoring on Stevens' first possession, with Ryan scoring consecutive goals 99 seconds apart. Ranaldi scored his first power-play goal of the season, before Stockfeder netted his second career goal to push the lead to five. Kunz added his second of the day to give Stevens a commanding six-goal lead after the completion of the opening quarter.

Burns opened second-quarter scoring, before Shaw spoiled the shutout bit, beating Petracca following a successful clear. Ballai scored two of the next three goals to give Stevens an 11-1 lead at the intermission,

Brown netted his first of the day to open second-half scoring and the Ducks would go on to score the next seven goals to provide the final margin. Over the course of their 10-game winning streak, the Ducks are averaging 18.7 goals.

Stevens outshot Elmira 48-7, including a 32-3 mark in shots on goal. The Ducks took at least nine shots in every quarter and held Elmira without a shot in the opening period. Ryan led all players with seven attempts, while James Mayer and Isaac Gottheil each took two to pace Elmira.

Defensively, Stevens forced 30 Elmira turnovers, with nearly half of the miscues coming on clearing attempts. Ranaldi led the Ducks with two caused turnovers and seven different players caused one. Mattice registered Elmira's lone caused turnover. The Soaring Eagles forced 18 Duck turnovers, although eight took place on shot-clock violations.

Stevens was dominant on faceoffs, with Kiessling earning a career-high 17 wins in the 'X'. Junior Connor Murphy won all four faceoff attempts as Stevens' 21 victories in the 'X' tied for the third-most this season. Mayer had each of the Soaring Eagles' three faceoff wins on the afternoon.

The advantage in the 'X' helped Stevens achieve a 42-15 advantage in ground balls. Kiessling scooped up a career-high 11 ground balls to lead all players, while seven different players picked up three. Mayer and Mattice each had three ground balls to lead Elmira.

Stevens was successful on 12 of its 13 clearing attempts, and the Ducks continue to rank among the nation's leaders in clearing percentage. A smothering Stevens defense forced Elmira into a successful clear on just 11 of their 26 attempts.

Each team committed just one penalty. Ranaldi converted Stevens' extra-man opportunity, while the Ducks filled off sophomore Adam Corby's slashing penalty.

Up Next: No. 11/No. 10 Men's Lacrosse welcomes St. John Fisher College to the DeBaun Athletic Complex for the regular-season home finale. The Ducks have won five straight meetings between the teams and lead the all-time series 8-4. Prior to the game, Men's Lacrosse will honor its graduating senior class.
