WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 24, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team was swept by No. 16 Manhattanville College in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
The Valiants improved to 35-2 on the year, while the Ducks dropped to 17-15 overall.
Game One (L, 4-3)
Senior
Christine LaRochelle fell to 5-9 in the circle after pitching 4.1 innings. Alycia Feeney (14-1) earned the win with seven strikeouts with Jasmine Feliciano collected her second save of the year.Â
With runners on first and second, junior
Gina DeOliveira brought in the Ducks' first run of the day with a RBI single in the bottom of the third inning.Â
Aarin Hartenstein answered in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer to left center before sophomore
Siobhan Cottell singled up the middle to bring in junior
Victoria Kapp for the tying run.
The Valiants added two more runs in the fifth when Brooke Franson scored following an error by Stevens and Evonne Torres hit and RBI double to extend Manhattanville's lead to two.Â
Junior
Melissa Alfonso cut the lead to one run with her RBI single up the middle to send home DeOliveira in the bottom of the inning.Â
DeOliveira and senior
Katie Tirabassi each recorded singles in the bottom of the seventh to give the Ducks a chance of tying or taking the lead, but a groundout by Alfonso marked the final out of game one.

Game Two (L, 5-4)
Feliciano (5-1) earned the win of game two with four strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched. Senior
Marissa Cappello (10-4) was dealt the loss after pitching the first 2.1 innings.Â
Giovanna Liggett opened game two with a two-run home run over the center field fence. Jordan Boyd added the third run of the first inning with an RBI single to left center.Â
After Alfonso singled up the middle in the first at bat of the bottom of the second, sophomore
Amanda Delorme recorded her first RBI in exactly a month to put Stevens on the board.Â
In the top of the third, Alianna Orduna collected an RBI on a base-hit up the middle for Manhattanville's fourth run of game two. Alexis Ventarola added the fifth and final run with the Valiants' second homer of the game in the following stanza.Â
Senior
Julia DeCandia helped cut the lead with her RBI single to left center. Delorme tried to add the third run for the Ducks as junior
Samantha Schattin sent the ball to the shortstop, but Sophia Chapelone fired towards Torres to tag out the Southington, Connecticut native at home.Â
With the Stevens dugout sporting their rally caps in the bottom of the seventh, DeCandia reached base after being hit by a pitch and Schattin singled on a bunt to the pitcher. After freshman
Meg Halloran advanced both runners on sac-bunt, Feliciano tallied her fourth strikeout to bring the Valiants one out away from the sweep.Â
Tirabassi then sent a 1-1 offering to left center for a two-run double to cut the lead to one and give the Ducks a chance to tie the game. However, Alfonso bounced out to the shortstop for the final out of the day.Â
Inside the Numbers
- Kapp recorded the only stolen base on the day for Stevens in game one.Â
- DeOliveira went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game of the day.Â
- Schattin and Kapp each totaled two runs scored across both games.Â
- Delorme finished 2-for-3 at the dish in game two.Â
