Softball Splits E8 Doubleheader with Alfred

The Ducks fell in game one to Alfred before winning game two of the doubleheader.

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 6, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team dropped game one before taking game two against Alfred University in their first Empire 8 Conference doubleheader of the season at Weehawken Waterfront Park Saturday afternoon.

Game One (L, 1-0)
Jessica Wilcox collected her eighth win on the mound as she recorded nine strikeouts in 7.0 innings pitched.

Becca Alexander singled down the left field line in the first at bat of the second inning. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch before making her way to third base when Ashley Lugo hit a sacrifice bunt. Lu Krawzcyk then grounded out to the shortstop, but Alexander was able to score on the play.

Stevens saw their best opportunity to score in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior Julia DeCandia and junior Samantha Schattin each registered a single to put two runners on base with no outs.

Freshman Meg Halloran then reached first on a fielder's choice, as Alfred decided to tag out DeCandia to prevent her from advancing to third. Senior Katie Tirbassi then worked a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Madison Gemma fought to bring a run in, but ultimately popped up to the shortstop for the final out of the inning.

Game Two (W, 3-2)
Senior Marissa Cappello earned her fifth win of the season after striking out four batters and allowing just two hits over 7.0 inning pitched.

Following three scoreless innings, junior Melissa Alfonso singled before advancing to second on the throw and then heading to third on a throwing error by the catcher, which allowed sophomore Madison Gemma to score the first run of the game.

Alfred tied the game in the top of the fifth when Sydney Saucedo singled to center field to bring in Lugo.

In the bottom of the inning, Halloran reached first on a fielder's choice before immediately advancing to second when the second baseman attempted to complete a double play but threw the ball over the first baseman's head.

Tirabassi then brought Halloran in when she singled through the right side and then reached second on the throw. Next at bat, Gemma hit an RBI double to give the Ducks a 3-1 lead.

With one out and a runner on base in the top of the seventh, Allison O'Toole hit a sac-fly to right field to bring the Saxons within one run. However, Saucedo flied out to center field for the final out of the game.
