WEEHAWKEN, N.J. (April 9, 2019) – The Stevens Institute of Technology softball team swept Houghton College in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
Game One (W, 2-1)
Senior
Christine LaRochelle earned her second win on the mound this season after striking out six batters in nine innings. Kaylee Jentsch was dealt her fifth loss despite her four strikeouts.
Hannah Haskell registered the first hit of the game in the top of the first with a single to right center before advancing to second on a wild pitch by LaRochelle. Taylor Sile followed with a single to left field to push the runner to third.
Mariah Rogers then hit the third-straight single for the Highlanders to bring in Haskell for run number one.
In the bottom of the inning, junior
Samantha Schattin dropped the ball into left field for a leadoff double. Freshman
Meg Halloran then pushed Schattin to third with a sac-bunt.
After Kaylee Jentsch (4-5) collected her first strikeout of the game, sophomore
Madison Gemma recorded an RBI single to tie the game.
The game was sent into extra innings following six scoreless stanzas. The eighth inning was hitless for both teams and only saw a walk to put a runner on base for Houghton.
With one out in the top of the ninth, Jentsch recorded a base hit for the Highlanders. However, Katelyn Cook lined out to third base before LaRochelle struck out her final batter of the game to put the Ducks back on offense.
Senior Katie Tirbassi reached first on a walk to start the bottom of the inning. Gemma singled through the right side before advancing to second on the throw as Tirabassi reached third.
In the third at bat of the inning, junior
Gina DeOliveira hit a walk-off single straight up the middle to bring in Tirabassi for the winning run.
Game Two (W, 5-1)
Senior
Marissa Cappello collected her seventh win as she struck out a season-high 13 batters over seven innings. Sile fell to 4-3 on the mound after giving up 10 hits throughout the game.
Schattin worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning before advancing on another sac-bunt from Halloran. Tirabassi then sent the ball over the left field fence to register a two-run homer and give Stevens a 2-0 lead.
Gemma almost added another home run for the Ducks as she drove a one-strike offering to deep right field, but McKenzie Marti snagged the ball before it could get over the fence.
In the following inning, junior
Victoria Kapp and sophomore
Amanda Delorme both singled to put runners on first and second. Senior
Julia DeCandia followed with a single of her own on a hard hit up the middle before advancing to second on the throw, allowing Kapp to score.
After Schattin reached first on a fielder's choice when she hit the ball towards the pitcher, Delorme was tagged out at home as Sile flipped the ball to her catcher.
With Halloran at the plate, Schattin stole second prior to advancing to third as the catcher threw towards second in attempt to tag out the runner but no one was there to field the ball, which allowed DeCandia to round third and score the fourth run.
Stevens added their final run in the bottom of the sixth inning as pinch runner
Lexi Gregule stole home when DeCandia became stuck in a pickle between first and second. The Mahwah, New Jersey native evaded the defense until Gregule scored before she was tagged out at first.
Barbara Richert hit an RBI single up the middle to score Sile in the top of the seventh, but Cappello then struck out two batters to end the game.
