#3 St. John Fisher Edges Baseball to Knock Ducks Out of E8 Tournament

The Ducks dropped a 4-3 decision to St. John Fisher in the Empire 8 Championship Semifinals.

ITHACA, N.Y. (May 10, 2019)  – The second-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology baseball team fell to #3 St. John Fisher College, 4-3 as they were knocked out of the Empire 8 Conference Championships Friday afternoon at Hoy Field on the campus of Cornell University.

Junior Chandler Brierley (3-4) struck out five batters in 3.2 innings pitched for the Ducks. Brandon Roberts (3-0) pitched five innings with two strikeouts to remain undefeated on the mound for Fisher. The Cardinals will play top-seeded Ithaca College tomorrow in the conference championship.

Senior Matthew Pasko gave the Ducks the lead in the top of the fourth with a double to right center that brought in both freshman Ryan Finegan and junior Patrick Rood. Pasko then gave Stevens a 3-0 lead when he scored on a wild pitch by Matthew Raudelunas.

In the bottom of the inning, Michael Beimel hit a sac-fly that allowed Thomas Pasquale score. Jake Hewitt followed with a two-run single to left field to tie the game. Fisher then took the one-run lead on an RBI single by Justin Graham.

The Ducks saw their best chance to take back the lead in the top of the ninth when graduate student Tommy Baronner and junior A.J. Falconite both singled to put two runners on. With two outs, senior Matt Branco popped up to the shortstop on an 0-1 count for the final out of the game.

"It always is an outpouring of emotion when a season comes to an end, especially in a close game like today," reflected head coach Kristaps Aldins. "And you realize, as a coach, that you won't have the privilege of coaching these seniors any more. They were a fantastic group both on and off the field. I wish we could have extended the season just one more pitch, just one more batter, just one more inning, and one day for these seniors. Their contributions extend further than just the baseball field. They were great teammates and were an absolute joy to be around. We will miss them so much."
