Men's Tennis bows out of the NCAA's in second round

Men's Tennis season comes to a close against nationally ranked Mary Washington

AMHERST, MASS. (May 11, 2019) – No. 32 Stevens Institute of Technology Men's Tennis could not pull off the upset against No. 15 University of Mary Washington in their second round NCAA match up at the Amherst Tennis Center. Mary Washington defeated Stevens 5-1 and moves on to the regional final where they will take on No. 4 Amherst College on Sunday. The Ducks battled but the Eagles proved to be too much as they never trailed in the match.

"Even though the box score shows a loss today against Mary Washington, the way we closed out our season was a huge win for the future of our program. The growth and development of this young team is admirable and all the ups and downs we experienced throughout the year will undoubtedly pay off next season," stated Head Coach Steve Gachko. "I'm confident this team will be motivated to make some big gains in the offseason and return with even higher expectations."

Mary Washington took the third and second doubles flight to jump out an early 2-0 lead. Freshman Marc Feliu Gomez and sophomore Mark Kanevsky were determined to get the Ducks first point on the board at No. 1 doubles. Feliu Gomez and Kanevsky were in a competitive bout with Moses Hutchison / Matt Miles and were trailing 6-5 before storming back to tie it at 7-7. The No. 1 duo came out on top in tiebreaker 7-5 and recorded an 8-7 win in the first doubles flight.

"I'm so proud of how Mark Kanevsky stepped up into our top doubles spot to pull out two big wins this tournament with Marc Feliu," expressed Head Coach Steve Gachko. "We lost fairly decisively to Mary Washington's top team earlier in the year, so it was very satisfying to come away with the win today."

Stevens could not keep momentum on their side as they headed into singles competition. Mary Washington registered victories at the No. 5, No. 4, and No. 6 singles flights to clinch the match. Sophomore Keegan Morris was playing very well and leading in the second set in the second singles flight against regionally ranked Matt Miles at the time of the matches completion. Feliu Gomez was also in a highly competitive bout at No. 1 singles against regionally ranked Patrick Hughes when the match finished, they were tied 4-4 in the first set.

Stevens season ends with an overall record 15-10 but they have a lot to be proud of. The Ducks won their tenth consecutive Empire 8 championship and return everyone on the roster for next season. This experience at the NCAA championships has helped this young squad grow even more as they get ready to transition into the Middle Atlantic Conference next season.
